Abstract

From Ancestral Bonds to Universal Humanity: Prophetic Humanism and the Transcendental Dimension of Interfaith Brotherhood in Maluku. This article examines how interfaith brotherhood rooted in the pela and gandong traditions of Maluku can move from ties bound by ancestral history toward a universal ethic of humanity. The study is based on field research in three negeri in Ambon City—Batu Merah (Muslim), Passo (Christian), and Ema (Christian)—using a qualitative approach with phenomenological and hermeneutic readings, supported by observation, interviews with customary and religious leaders, documentation, and library research. The analysis draws on Kuntowijoyo’s prophetic social science (humanization, liberation, transcendence) together with the ethics of encounter in Buber, Levinas, and Ricoeur. The findings show that the pela between Batu Merah and Passo and the gandong between Batu Merah and Ema are lived through mutual participation in religious celebrations, and that their members understand the bond as a dual responsibility: horizontally toward fellow human beings and vertically toward God according to each faith. However, the brotherhood is still largely understood as limited to communities sharing a historical bond. The article argues that the motto “ale rasa beta rasa” contains a universal ethical principle that can liberate brotherhood from these historical boundaries, and proposes a three-layer model—historical bond, ethic of humanity, and plural transcendence—for strengthening peace in Maluku.

Abstract

Delaying to Sustain: The Ethics of Self-Restraint and Ecological Cosmology in the Sasi Laut Tradition from the Perspective of Islamic Environmental Philosophy. This article examines the sasi laut tradition—a customary temporary ban on harvesting marine resources—as a source of environmental ethics, through the case of the sea cucumber (teripang) sasi practiced by a coastal Muslim community in the Aru Islands, Maluku. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews with the village head, the customary leader, and community members, and documentation. The data were analysed through Islamic environmental philosophy (khalifah, amanah, mizan, sabr, and muraqabah), Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s critique of the desacralization of nature, Hans Jonas’s ethics of responsibility, and Elinor Ostrom’s theory of commons governance. The findings show that sasi operates on three interrelated levels: a cosmological level, in which the sea is treated as a sacred space requiring permission and prayer; a socio-ethical level, in which deliberation, graduated sanctions, and the distribution of harvests to the mosque and education sustain justice; and an ecological level, expressed in closure periods of several years and limits on catch size and harvesting methods. The article argues that the core of sasi is an ethic of self-restraint, a temporal virtue of waiting that resonates with the Islamic concept of sabr. It also notes tensions, including the weakening of enforcement, pressure from outsiders, and the commercialization of harvesting rights.
