Abstract

Religion and humans are like salt and pepper, they are inseparable. The former becomes an integral part to define the lives of the latter. In some cases, religion is perceived as a tool to construct system of meaning. Utilizing Silberman’s paradigm, this article tries to uncover the manifestation of religion as a groundwork of meaning system in human life within The Devil All the Time (2020) by Antonio Campos. A qualitative method is adopted, with data sourced from library research encompassing both written materials such as books and academic journals and visual media specifically the movie itself. The findings reveal that religion incarnates as meaning system through various elements – self and world belief, contingencies, expectations, goals, actions, and emotions. The concept of religious meaning system is exemplified by several characters who are directly tangent to the religious practices.

Abstract

As a minority group in the United States, Chinese-Americans encounter a multitude of challenges throughout the process of integrating into the dominant societal structure. For Chinese-American adolescents, these challenges are particularly intricate, given that they are in a phase of self-discovery and face psychological issues related to maturity and existence. The short film “Americanized” (2021) portrays the phenomenon of identity negotiation experienced by the fifth generation of Chinese-Americans attempting to assimilate into both the African-American and Asian-American communities. However, due to a perceived lack of alignment with the cultural and normative expectations of both groups, the character ultimately becomes marginalized. Her efforts to negotiate her identity are evident in her use of linguistic styles, fashion, gestures, and elements of hip-hop culture that symbolize her identity, yet ultimately result in further alienation from both groups. This phenomenon illustrates the challenges Asian- American adolescents face in attempting to find a place between the two cultures, and underscores the complexity of the assimilation process that can result in identity marginalization.

Abstract

This study departs from the view that Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa website serves as a showcase for the national and international language. How does the website display and represent the image and value of the Indonesian language both domestically and abroad. The purpose of this study is to reveal the linguistic ideology and diffusion of language (terminology) through the digital media of official state institutions. The research method used is Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis (CDA), focusing on three dimensions of analysis, namely textual analysis (micro description), discursive practice (meso interpretation), and social analysis (macro-explanation). This study focuses on the features of BIPA, Penerjemahan Daring, and KBBI Daring on the website. The results of the study show that the features on the Badan Bahasa website represent Indonesian as a national identity and a means of diplomacy. These features are not merely a collection of data or terms, but play a role in spreading the ideology, hegemony, and legitimacy of Indonesian at the regional, national, and international levels. Although the language standardization efforts have been relatively successful, it is necessary to continuously update the data and evaluate its effectiveness in society. This study is limited to the study of language diffusion, and further in-depth research is needed through other approaches such as linguistic corpus, sociolinguistics, and comparative historical linguistics.
