Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the productivity and catch composition of fish using purse seine gear at the Fish Landing Base (PPI) Kasiwa, Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi. The research employed a quantitative approach, with primary data collected from two purse seine vessels during one month of fishing operations. Secondary data were obtained from relevant literature and institutions. The analysis was conducted by calculating the productivity levels and catch composition of purse seine operations. The results show that the productivity of purse seine varied across fishing trips, but overall, the gear was considered feasible and relatively efficient. The catch composition was dominated by small pelagic fish, particularly kawakawa (tongkol banyar) at 32% and frigate tuna (tongkol pisang balaki) at 24%, followed by bullet tuna (tongkol pisang cerutu), skipjack (cakalang), mackerel (kembung), and scads (layang deles). These findings indicate that purse seine fishing is well-suited to the characteristics of fish resources in Mamuju waters and has the potential to support sustainable fisheries management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the distribution patterns, marketing margins, profits, and efficiency of the tuna marketing channel at the Kasiwa Fish Landing Site (PPI) in Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi. The method used was a descriptive survey employing purposive sampling of 40 respondents, consisting of fishermen, distributors, port market vendors, and retail vendors. Data were analyzed using formulas for marketing margin, marketing profit, marketing efficiency (EPS), and the fisherman’s share. The results indicate six marketing channel patterns: two for tuna and four for baby tuna. For tuna, Channel I (Fishermen → Distributors) generated a margin of Rp17,000/kg with an EPS of 2.5% and a fisherman’s share of 88%, while Channel II (Fishermen → Port Market Vendors) had a margin of Rp10,000/kg with an EPS of 0.12% and a fisherman’s share of 60%. For baby tuna, Channel I has the highest fisherman’s share (45%) and is the most efficient, while the longest channels (Channels II and IV) yield the lowest fisherman’s share (33%). Overall, the marketing channels at PPI Kasiwa are considered efficient because the EPS values in all channels are below 5%. These findings imply the need for policies that encourage the strengthening of short marketing channels, increased direct access for fishermen to distributor traders, and the development of marketing infrastructure at PPI Kasiwa to maximize the share of the price received by fishermen.

Abstract

Small-scale fishermen face structural challenges such as limited market access, fluctuations in catch prices, and low technological and information capacity. This study aims to analyze the level of digital literacy, the use of online platforms, and their impact on the economic resilience of small-scale fishermen in West Sulawesi, as well as to design an integrative model to strengthen digital capabilities and market access. The method used is a mixed-methods approach involving a survey of 150 fishermen, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs). Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The research results indicate that fishermen’s digital literacy remains low to moderate, the utilization of fisheries marketplaces is relatively low, and digital literacy and access to online platforms have not yet significantly impacted fishermen’s economic resilience due to infrastructure limitations, high data plan costs, insufficient guidance, and the dominance of traditional transactions. The study proposes an integrative model that combines the improvement of digital literacy based on fishermen’s needs, the utilization of simple online platforms, and sustainable institutional support to strengthen fishermen’s bargaining power and expand market access.
