Abstract

Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the American Constitution guarantee the same-sex marriage in 2015. It is the syllabus of Same-Sex Marriage in the United States that become the object of the research. This research aims to identify the engagement devices and examines how engagement system in the syllabus of same-sex marriage legal document of the United States that indicates the meaning and relation with the readers. The theory proposed by Martin and White of engagement system (2005) based on appraisal system is used to support the analysis. From the analysis, the researcher found there are 116 heteroglossic and 37 monoglossic types from 153 clauses. The presence of heteroglossic as the most type indicates that the petitioners not only made themselves as references or data sources, but also they tried to add many references and other brackets as data and facts that strengthen their statements. In addition, the presence of 'pronounce' type as the most type in heteroglossic as contract shows that the petitioners made many straightforward and assertive statements. These statements are representative of the assured feeling of the petitioners after seeing the fact that the same-sex marriage was discriminated. The presence of 'entertain' type as the most type in heteroglossic as expand shows us that the petitioners support same-sex marriages so that their rights can be recognized in the United States. Petitioners attest the ideals life of same-sex marriages who will be peaceful and prosperous like the hetero-sex marriages. Because they believe that marriage is fundamental right for all citizen.

Abstract

After being recognized as a legitimate form of marriage in various countries, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the American Constitution guarantee the marriage of same-sex.  It is the syllabus of same-sex Marriage in the United States that become the object of the research. This thesis aims to identify the attitude types and clauses constituent of syllabus constructed by same-sex marriage proposer in the United States and examines how attitude types in the syllabus of Same-sex Marriage in the United States indicates the meaning and relation with the readers. The theory proposed by Martin and White of Appraisal system (2005) based on attitude types is used to support the analysis. The research found that the attitude types in same-sex marriage syllabus there are 92 affect, 54 judgement, and 58 appreciation. Based on the attitudinal types in this research, the same-sex proposers feeling indicates they are being discriminated because their citizenship rights have not been fulfilled. It can be seen from the most choice of the word "harm" that indicates the existence of a condition that there is a rule injustice. Therefore the same-sex proposers need to be protected their right to marry the same-sex couples. Validation the right of same-sex marriage, will give them a guarantee to live safely. If the right cannot be avowed, the same-sex actor will be suspected as a criminal by the state. The same-sex proposers believe this is harmful decision. Because they think that marriage is an important right that everyone can procure it, including the same-sex orientation. This right cannot be parting from the other right and same-sex marriage right must be legalized by the state. Therefore the state must to treat the citizen equally.

Abstract

This research intends to examine how textual meaning strategies influence the user of Go-Jek mobile application through UX (User Experience) writing. The data of this research was the UX writing of the Go-Jek mobile application in version 4. 10. 3. All the UX writing in its apps would be disparted into clauses. Then, the theories of UX writing and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), especially the Theme System, are applied in this research. This research has shown that Go-Jek’s UX writing used some textual meaning strategies. The three highest percentages of mood classes are declarative, imperative, and WH-interrogatives. Declarative clauses give a lot of brief information to the user. This information builds the purposeful concept of UX writing. Then, imperative clauses show much conciseness of word choices that eases the user in understanding the guideline of its application step by step. Third, WH- interrogatives clauses indicate conversational or interactivity responses, which create an intimacy between Go-Jek and its user. The interactivity can stimulate and encourage the user to try new services and promotions. Besides, their clear statement or command helps the user in minimizing errors. These strategies are fruitful for both usability and professionalism of the Go-Jek application through UX writing.Keywords; UX writing, User Experience, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Textual meaning
