Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this article is to discuss Barth's contribution to public theology. The author's thesis is that although Barth did not construct a work of public theology systematically, his thoughts on public theology are clearly visible in his life and writings, because Barth emphasized that Christian theology is a response made by the church to bear witness in the public sphere about the work God's reconciliation with the world in Christ. As a result, according to Barth, Christian theology itself is public because the church targets the public as a place where Christ is witnessed. Based on Barth's contribution to public theology, the author shows two responses that the church can make as a witness to Christ in the public sphere, namely by opposing lordless power and liberating oppressed groups.

Abstract

From the time of the Reformation until contemporary times, the epistle of James has been considered to have no significant contribution to Christian theology. When compared to Paul's letters, the letter of James is less desirable or even often considered inferior to be involved in theological discourse. In reality, it can be argued that James 3:13-18 provides constructive theological implications when read with a theological interpretation of Scripture approach. This article proposes an assessment with a theological interpretation approach to James 3:13-18 to see the Christological indication that Jesus Christ is the embodiment of God’s wisdom. Without neglecting the importance of the praxis of wisdom, this interpretation theologically testifies that the gentle, from above, pure, reconciling, gracious, obedient, merciful and so on wisdom that James refers to has been realized in and through the person of Jesus Christ. The church as a community of believers who read James 3:13-18 needs to realize its calling to become a community of wise people with the power of the Holy Spirit to imitate the life of Jesus who is the embodiment of God's wisdom.

Abstract

Since modern times, the nature of theology has experienced as an unnecessary separation between theoretical-doctrinal discipline or practical application discipline. The purpose of this article is to propose the nature of theology as application and draw its implication in the context of theological education and ecclesiastical ministry. By using the conceptual analysis method, the author analyzes and uses the view of John M. Frame which argues that theology should not be seen only as an abstract theoretical doctrine, or only teaches how to live, but theology should be viewed as life itself. The implication of theology as application in the context of theological education and ecclesiastical ministry shows a bounding and an involvement between seminary and church. By viewing theology as application, the goal is not only limited to theorizing, but also to be the doers of God’s words because there is a close relationship between what is known and what is done, and vice versa.

Abstract

This article raises the issue of eating, which is rarely discussed theologically, while the issue of eating has been widely discussed in various other disciplines. This article aims to construct a theology of eating through the lens of Trinitarian theology of eating. Using the doctrine of the Trinity as a lens to re-understand the theological meaning of eating, I argue that the theological meaning of eating is a means of nurturing, communion, and hospitality. This article uses a constructive theology method with a qualitative approach that examines various kinds of literature that discuss the doctrine of the Trinity and eating and the relationship between the two variables to construct a Trinitarian theology of eating. The results of this study indicate that the meaning of eating should not be reduced to merely satisfying hunger because eating is a means through which God nurtures human life and establish communion and hospitality between individuals and even with God himself.
