Abstract

The research aims to describe the language choice codes used by clothing Sellers and buyers in Maisara Shop, BTC (Beteng Trade Center, Pasar Kliwon, Surakarta. This research uses the sociolinguistics approach. The data of this research are utterances of the clothing sellers and buyers in Maisara Shop, BTC. The sources of the data are the sellers and the buyers in the traditional market. The data were collected by using observation and interview methods. Then, contextual approach is used to analyze the data. This research yields the following findings such as: (1) The language codes consist of code switching and code mixing. Code switching occurs from Indonesian-Javanese and Javanese-Indonesian. Meanwhile code mixing occurs in Indonesian, Javanese and English Words; (2) The speech level code only consist of ngoko; (3) The style codes consist of elaborated and restricted codes; (4) The dialect codes consist of Pekalongan, Surakarta and Semarang dialects; (5) The register codes consists of eleven words that are only be understood by the clothing sellers.

Abstract

The phenomenon of memes has been quite popular among internet users in recent years. Various types of memes have become a new culture for the audience on the internet. This research will analyze the figurative language that is often used by meme creators and the reasonS. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in Online English Memes. The sampling technique is purposive sampling technique. The data documentation technique is to search for Online English Memes on several provider sites on the internet (Reddit, 9GAG, Facebook). Data analysis techniques are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The researcher used data triangulation to validate the data based on sources, methods, researcher, and theory. The research findings show figurative language that there were 23 data include words phrases, clauses, and sentences in 11 different types. The types with the highest number of occurrences are Alliteration, Hyperbole, Irony, and Metonymy, with 3 data. Meanwhile, the types with the lowest number of occurrences are Allusion, Metaphor, and Repetition, with 1 data. Personification, Sarcasm, Simile, and Symbol have 2 data. The reasons for using figurative language in memes are to create humour, to express emotions, to convey ideas, and to grab attention.

Abstract

In order to properly organize ideas and express significant information, non-native students sometimes struggle with cohesion and coherence in their essays. This study examines the body of literature to pinpoint frequent problems non-native writers have while trying to make their writing coherent and cohesive. This study aims to assess the literature on cohesion and coherence issues in essays written by non-native students, with a particular focus on a number of components, including referential and relational coherence, theme and rheme, and grammatical and lexical cohesion. The literature study looks at papers that address problems with coherence and cohesiveness in student writing. It groups the results according to several coherence and cohesion criteria, such as referential and relational coherence, theme and rheme, and grammatical and lexical cohesion. An analysis of the essays shows common problems that non-native students face. Accompanying difficulties with collocation and diction are lexical cohesion faults, like as repetition and restricted vocabulary utilization. Issues with conjunction usage and text arrangement are examples of grammatical cohesion issues. Coherence is an issue that students struggle with; they have trouble coming up with thesis statements, topic sentences, introductions, and conclusion that are all coherent. Recognizing these difficulties emphasizes the necessity of focused interventions to improve non-native students' writing abilities. The development of instruments such as Tool for Automatic Cohesion Analysis (TAACO) presents encouraging paths for methodically evaluating and resolving cohesion concerns. These insights can be used by educators to create coherence and cohesiveness-enhancing tactics for non-native essay writers, which will ultimately result in clearer, more coherent writing.Â
