Building, which consists of many building materials arranged in following the designer?s patter, could be stood and built in many scale, time and place. Development of the shape in building design has been changed from time to time as in time development and human ability that keeps increasing. Many buildings came from human civilization. The term ?vernacular? and ?traditional? in architecture context actually has a root meaning which is almost the same; both have the same meaning that can be attached to one form of architecture work which is oriented on locality aspects and historiy of its existence. However, how can we distinguish the two terms? One way to find it out is to do a case study on two traditional architecture buildings: Balinese buildings and Minangkabau buildings taken as the sample study. In general, both building have two criteria: culture philosophy and adaptative modernism. Through descriptive analytical methods, the two building types were analyzed to acquire the definition of the building shapes which can be classified whether they belong to vernacular or traditional. The results show that vernacular architecture is a form of original work which is specified with the content and a very strong local and contextual philosophy proper to its time, while the traditional architectural building is a vernacular masterpiece recognized by acclamation and hereditary within a very long time.

It is known that traditional architectures are a product of human conception full of culture and philosophy, while modern architectural concepts prioritize functionality and simplicity that tends to be simple or quick. Now the architectural concept slowly changes according to the conditions of time, then so is the existence of works of architecture that also changes. This condition can be found in almost major cities in Indonesia, where many houses or buildings built still in traditional architecture theme but combined and matched with modern architecture concept. One of many diverse cultures of Indonesia archipelago architecture that has evolved is West Java. There are a lot of people trying to apply the concept of Sundanese traditional house in their residence. Shifting sacred values in traditional concept seems indeed to be lost along with the differences in modern human civilization.

Besides having a particular function or purpose, a building also has certain characters that generally appear and are accumulated into an image or impression given by anyone who sees the building. Function is a fundamental starting point for all architectural expression. The influence of function on the architecture is quiteobvious especially when we observe differences in the use of certain building and how certain activities can create the form of the building. However, is it true that the function and form of the building has any relation with the formation of building classification (typology)? For that reason, this paper discusses a case study ofmosque buildings.

Resting is essential to restore the freshness of body both physically and mentally. To optimally gain freshness quality depends on a conducive and comfortable atmosphere during resting time. Architecture also makes convenience factor as a basis for managing comfort zones as classification placement for room specification. One convenience aspect to consider is the noise level, so it is natural that the resting room (bedroom) is placed in zones that are considered quiet, away from the noise level. Theoritically, noise is getting weaker as the sound source distance is getting further. Sound source will also propagate or bounce on a specific object. On contrary, in this case (at the researcher’s residential), the rooms closer to the sound source are even have lower noise levels due to the lower position and barrier block.
