Abstract

This study focuses on examining four Indonesian English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teachers’ experiences regarding their identity construction and negotiation in a language institute. Given the concern on an analytic framework by an adapted model of TESOL teacher identity, the teachers’ experiences were explored through life-history interview. The results revealed a complex process of transforming professional practices and constructing identities in relation to the struggles of becoming ESP teachers. The participants constructed ESP teacher identities through acquiring subject knowledge via professional development activities and building a sense of intrinsic fulfillment in becoming ESP teachers. However, the participants found challenge to cope with the students’ demands of learning ESP. Furthermore, a need to equip the ESP teachers with ESP skills in various subject knowledge areas became the participants’ concern in order to meet the students’ expectancy as well as to enhance their professional development.

Abstract

This study aimed at examining metacognitive strategies applied by eight missionaries during their learning in a specialized English course. As English has a significant influence to contribute to the spread of missionaries worldwide, a need of assisting the missionaries with sufficient use of English becomes a concern since they are required to use special expressions and skills to meet situational needs when they do their missions. This carries the notion of ESP on a contextual language learning specified for the missionaries as it provides opportunities for them to manage their learning. It encourages them to use metacognitive strategies during the course, focusing on planning for the learning strategy, monitoring the strategy use, and evaluating the whole learning. The current study was conducted in the Language Institute of Sanata Dharma University within the Center of English for Specific Purposes (CESP) division in 2018. Written reflections over the lessons were collected from the missionaries as the main data source. A document analysis, then, was employed to examine the data qualitatively. The findings showed how the missionaries applied the metacognitive strategies to assist their learning.

Abstract

This study aims to report the utility of Pecha Kucha in promoting students speaking skills in the general English course. As English known as the international language for communication, Indonesians expect to master English in order to broaden their future career opportunities. Most of them seek for English courses providing various communicative activities with the hope that they can improve and sharpen their speaking skills. Although the course has been designed for communication purpose, some students still are not be able to express their ideas freely during the speaking activities. They may feel afraid of making grammatical errors resulting to their low speaking performance. To facilitate students learning and encourage them to practice their speaking skills, Pecha Kucha has been utilized during the course. The study was conducted in the Language Institute of Sanata Dharma University in 2017. Recorded learning activities utilizing Pecha Kucha and field notes were collected through the classroom teaching-learning practices. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted to explore the findings and the analysis. The findings shows that the students actively engage with the utilization of Pecha Kucha by being able to explore their ideas and practice their speaking skills, and enjoy the learning process eventually.
