Authentic Materials in Reading Comprehension Classroom: Its Effectiveness to Indonesian EFL Students’ Achievement Assiddiq, Muhammad Azwar

Abstract

The study was aimed to finding out (1) Whether or not the use of authentic materials is effective to develop the reading comprehension achievement of Indonesian EFL Students, (2) Whether or not the use of authentic materials is effective to develop reading motivation of Indonesian EFL Students. The study was carried out under the quantitative paradigm with quasi experimental design. The participants were selected by using cluster sampling technique and divided into two groups, namely authentic group and pedagogic group. Each of groups consisted of 39 participants. All participants were first grade students of high school in Bone, Indonesia. The data of the students’ reading comprehension achievement were collected by using reading comprehension test, while the data about the students’ reading motivation were taken from Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) containing 32 items on seven domains of motivation. The data collected were then analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS 20 program. The result showed that (1) the use of authentic materials was effective than pedagogic materials to develop reading comprehension achievement of the first year students. It was seen from the significance t-test result that reveals the significance value was lower than the significance level; (0.00 < 0.05). Furthermore, in relation to the reading motivation of students, (2) it was found that authentic materials was effective to develop students’ reading motivation. The result showed that the p-value of students’ reading motivation before and after treatments was greater than the level of significance (0.00 < 0.05).

Abstract

Sekolah memiliki peluang melalui Program Sekolah Penggerak (PSP) untuk menerima pendampingan dari Fasilitator Sekolah Penggerak (FSP) mengenai Implementasi Kurikulum Merdeka (IKM). Fasilitator dapat melakukan pendampingan PSP melalui lokakarya. Salah satu tema lokakarya PSP adalah Komunitas Belajar 2. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk memberikan pemahaman kepada peserta lokakarya mengenai konsep pengembangan komunitas belajar, yang diharapkan dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar peserta didik. Peserta lokakarya terdiri dari pengawas sekolah, kepala sekolah, dan dua perwakilan guru Komite Pembelajaran (KP). Di SMP Negeri 1 Kepanjen, Kabupaten Malang, terdapat 40 peserta yang menghadiri lokakarya tersebut. Peserta dapat menerapkan pemahaman mereka mengenai konsep komunitas belajar 4 pilar serta beyond PD melalui metode alur MERRDEKA, yang mencakup langkah-langkah: Mulai dari diri, Eksplorasi konsep, Ruang kolaborasi, Refleksi terbimbing, Demonstrasi kontekstual, Elaborasi pemahaman, Koneksi antar materi, dan Aksi Nyata.

Abstract

This study investigates the ecological metaphors used in the lontar manuscript of the Megantaka folklore of the Sasak tribe in Indonesia. Using an ecolinguistic approach and referring to Halleys ecological metaphor categories, the data were collected from the Lontar manuscript and analysed using the Metaphor Identification Method (MIP). The findings revealed that the metaphors belong to several categories: 1) the being category used in Tembang Sinom and Tembang Dandang, 2) the cosmos category appearing in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, 3) the energy category in Tembang Asmaradana, Tembang Durma, and Tembang Pangkur, 4) the substance category in Tembang Durma, 5) the terrestrial category in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, 6) the object category in Tembang Sinom, Tembang Asmaradana, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, 7) the living category in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, and 8) the animate category in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang. This study is essential for preserving local wisdom, providing an overview of social and cultural life in the past, and serving as material for community reflection in strengthening the national character. This study reflects the ecological conditions of language users and provides insights into the social and cultural lives of the Sasak people.
