Abstract

Deconstruction does not mean "demolition;" instead it means "breaking down" or analyzing something (especially the words in a work of fiction or nonfiction) to discover its true significance, which is supposedly rarely exactly what the author intended. This research aims at finding out the form of deconstruction character that is found in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The data were taken from dialogue, sentences, and passages from the novel. It is qualitative research in which the data were elaborated descriptively by using deconstruction theory by Jacques Derrida as a tool to analyze the character. The result of the research shows that there are indications of other traits that exist in the main character, Dorian Gray, before being deconstructed Dorian Gray character was a cruel, cold -hearted, and mean person, and after being deconstructed it proved that Dorian Gray also has character merciful, softhearted and kind person. This research implies that from the other traits found in the main character there is a possibility that it will not appear completely.

Abstract

This study analyzed the struggle of Edna Pontellier in the 19th-century liberal feminism in the novel entitled The Awakening written by Kate Chopin. Liberal feminism assumes that the main problem of gender inequality is the domination of institutions by men. Men control the economic sphere, political sphere, along with other things. 19th-century liberal feminism put its focus on women's equal liberty. In general, the novel is about Edna Pontellier, the woman who was trapped in the figure of a mother and wife. She struggled as a woman in the 19th-century to get equal liberty and follow her desires. The researcher used the qualitative method in analyzing the struggle of Edna Pontellier. The results of this study show Edna’s struggles to pursue her desires through Mill and Taylor’s 19th-century liberal feminism theory. She wanted to get the same political rights, economic opportunities, and education that men get. The results also showed the two things that lead Edna to become a figure of liberal feminism: an unhappy married life and her desire to free herself.

Abstract

Humans will always need others to communicate and build a relationship since they are created as social beings. Language enables people to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. It helps the hearer to clear up the speaker's intention. Using Leech’s theory (1983), this research aims at analyzing the function of the illocutionary act of Nate Macauley in a novel entitled One of Us Is Lying. The qualitative descriptive method was used as the research design to analyze and describe the function of the illocutionary act of Nate’s utterance. Karen M. McManus’ novel entitled One of Us Is Lying was used as a data source for this research. The data comprised written text (phrases, clauses, and sentences) which was spoken by Nate Macauley. The result indicates from 108 data, all of the illocutionary act’s functions are discovered, there are competitive function (Asking, ordering, and demanding), convivial function (Offering, inviting, greeting, thanking, apologizing, and complimenting), collaborative function (Asserting and reporting), and conflictive function (Accusing and cursing). However, some forms of the function of illocutionary act did not appear, such as begging in competitive function, congratulating in convivial function, announcing and instructing in collaborative function, threatening and reprimanding in conflictive function. The conclusion also implies that a single datum can have several illocutionary act’s functions. In this study, collaborative function is found to be the most frequently used illocutionary act’s function, specifically in a form of asserting. This function is indifferent goal since it is employed to state the truth or the speaker’s opinion regardless of whether it is good or bad

There is an indication that the students insert patterns in their mother tongues when they are involved in writing activities. This paper deals with the syntactical errors found among multilingual learners from an Engineering college in Bhubaneswar, India. The tests were conducted for the undergraduate students who belonged to the 2nd and 4th semester. Written tests were conducted for 130 students in the form of passage and a written essay.  The research finding showed that misordering is the highest error rate committed by students with a total percentage of 48%. Abstract

This research is supposed to find the types of personification and to know which personification types are dominant in Call Us What We Carry poems by Amanda Gorman. The previous research has emphasized the types, meanings, and functions of personification contained in literary work. The qualitative research method was used in this research. The data of this research were lines and stanzas which personification form is contained within the poem. This research used the types of personification theory by Breen (2021) to analyze the types of personification in the poem. The results of this research showed 3 types of personification which contained 51 data of personification types in total. The Platonic personification type which applied an action, picture, and the role of human knowledge into an inanimate object includes a total of 46 data was the most dominant of the three forms of personification since its characteristics most frequently occur in the lines and stanzas of Call Us What We Carry poems. Then, it is followed by the Prudentian personification type that has religious and deification aspects in their characters with a total of 3 data; it is uncommon to discover lines and stanzas in the Call Us What We Carry poems by Amanda Gorman that fulfill the features of Prudentian personification. The last position was occupied by the Aristotelian personification type which has a mundane and ironic characteristic. This personification type contained the least quantity of 2 data due to the rarity of lines and stanzas.
