Abstract

This study investigates at the communication uncertainty undergraduate lecturers face when delivering lectures through synchronous web video conferencing (SWVC) during online lectures. Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT) is employed to understand how lecturers use communication techniques to reduce uncertainty in online lecture. Undergraduate lecturers at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta who have ever conducted teaching online were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis is performed, with a particular focus on the methods that lecturers use to communicate with their students in order to build relationships and reduce uncertainty. The study identifies a number of important areas of uncertainty, such as technical challenges, the development of useful learning materials, evaluation of comprehension, student involvement, and conduct during online sessions. This study shows how lecturers use active, passive, and interactive strategy to reduce uncertainty. These results underline how crucial it is to deal with technology challenges, advance interactive teaching strategies, raise student participation, and establish effective communication in order to guarantee successful online education in the face of uncertainty.

Abstract

Leadership knowledge is crucial for school leaders to build strong teams and achieve institutional goals. When this foundational knowledge is lacking, progress is often hindered. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the "Mini MBA for School Leaders" program in enhancing participants' understanding of leadership principles. Using a one-group pretest-posttest design with a sample of 29 school leaders, we measured the change in leadership knowledge following the training intervention. Data were analyzed using a normalized gain (N-gain) score. The results showed an average N-gain score of 0.59, indicating the program was "moderately effective" in increasing knowledge. These findings suggest that condensed, targeted training programs like the Mini MBA can be a valuable tool for professional development in the education sector, offering practical pathways to improve school management.

Abstract

Various obstacles were encountered by teachers during distance learning when covid-19 pandemi hit. Online teaching has become tough challenge for the forest edge villages’ school teachers in Madiun regency, Indonesia. Online teaching obstacles were also felt by the first-grade teachers at Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah Plus Al-Makmun (MI Plus Al-Makmun) which caused uncertainty. This study aims to examine the types of the teachers’ uncertainty and their uncertainty reduction strategies using uncertainty reduction theory. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this study and in-depth interview was conducted to gather data. The results of this study indicate that there are two types of uncertainty felt by the informants, the first is cognitive which is related to difficulties in understanding their students’ character and their insecurity about students’ understanding of school lessons, and the second is behavioral uncertainty which is related to how students respond and behave in learning process. Meanwhile, the teachers’ uncertainty reduction strategy are (1) passive strategies through secret observation, (2) active strategies by seeking information through parents and fellow teachers, and (3) interactive strategies by communicating directly with students
