Abstract

In the process of teaching and learning English writing skill, some strategies which are considered appropriate for a certain group of learners, may not suitable for other groups as each group has its own problems and needs in writing. Therefore, teaching learning strategies for English writing requires to be continuously developed. This study aims to design strategies based on the students? writing needs and problems as the development of the previous common implemented strategies in writing course classes at English Study Program of Cordova University, West Sumbawa Regency. The research subjects were students who are active studying English as their major specialization and lecturers who have been teaching English writing course in academic year 2018/2019.The result shows that the previous strategies give little significant impact toward the students? writing skill progress. For the reasons, new strategies were designed and recommended to be continuously implemented for teaching and learning writing courses and involved in curriculum at English Study Program, Cordova University. Those strategies are (1) Collaborative Writing Strategy. (2) Combining Diary and Guided Writing Strategy. (3) Additional credit hours for writing course classes (4). Graded writing course classes need to be continuously taught by the same lecturer

Abstract

Current digital era has influenced the education system to provide technology-oriented activity in the classroom. The development of online formative assessment tools is one of the impacts of this digital revolution. This study aims at providing the perception of the university students on the use of one of online assessment tools called Plickers. The participants of this study consist of 11 pharmacy faculty students who got an English training. The use of Plickers was on their formative assessment of the English training. A semi-structured interview was conducted in order to gain the data. The interview focused on two research questions:(1) How do the university students compare traditional method with Plickers for English formative assessment? and (2) How are their perceptions on Plickers for English formative assessment? The results showed that the students had positive perceptions toward Plickers. When comparing Plickers to the traditional assessment method, the participants found that Plickers was more modern, more fun, and more effective and efficient. This study also elaborates the strength and the weakness of the Plickers in terms of the specific application. These findings could provide more insight on the use of Plickers for the assessment especially in Indonesian education.

Abstract

This study focused in implementing Partner Reading Strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension. The genre of text was limited to the descriptive text that becoming one of curriculum target for English language skills competence for grade 8th of SMPN 4 Taliwang, West Sumbawa Regency. By generating Classroom Action Based Research, 27 students were becoming sample toward this research. According to data analysis, this research found that the implementation of Partner Reading Strategy was claimed to improve student’s reading comprehension. This research was led to the Achievement Indicator by looking at the last cycle (Cycle II) achievement score as 76,86 and its categorization as Good. The implementation of Partner Reading Strategy also contributed to positive contribution into TL process as in; developed self-confident, activated in communication by sharing ideas each other, highly responded in taking feedback, developed social interaction between students and friends, and also teachers and their students. Therefore, the class situation became more fun and enjoyable for students and teacher. By meant that, the condition indirectly supported educational superiority and fostered student’s learning outcomes.
