Abstract

The present study examined the role of parents in supporting their children when learning through virtual means or on-line learning amid the pandemic COVID-19 outbreak. The respondents of the present study were five adults (3 males and 2 females) of different families. The study was conducted in a case study in order to allow the researchers to identify more specific data regarding the significance of parents’ role in the newly applied learning strategies as well as some potential determinants affecting their roles. The findings of the study indicate that there are some themes, which are percieved important by the parents, such as parents’ welfare, parent’s education, and time-managment. It is also found that parents’ higher education and the jobs related to pedagogy (e.g., being a teacher), can significantly help support their children learning process. Last but not least, younger ages pose more challenges to their parents as they are not really familiar with this new learning process.

Abstract

As a well-known poet, Rupi Kaur has written several poems which attract worldwide accolades. The present study explores several important aspects of her selected poems, such as feminism, humor, and irony. It was conducted qualitatively. In this case, the researchers acted to analyze and collected the data consecutively. The findings indicated that the concepts of feminism described in her poems tend to be more liberal and radical. The use of crude language to depict women as "male objects" plainly supports this notion. Furthermore, Kaur employs filthy language to prick the reader's conscience and make them aware of the societal critique offered in her poems. The element of Humor identified in the poems is used to portray the injustice of societal rules that restrict women. Despite showing poor grammatical aspects, such as the use of proper subject, the poem strives to vividly criticize the role of women, which is commonly valued solely on their physical looks, dismissing their worth and complexity as humans.

Abstract

The role of English in Indonesian pedagogical field has been studied extensively. However, the role of English in the employment context is scarcely scrutinized. Given the increasing awareness of being employable, examining the functions of international languages demanded in the employment context is imperative. The study focuses on some crucial aspects of English in the employment context, such as the workers' motivation toward English, the goals in learning English, and the potential hardships or challenges in learning or practicing English in their employment context. In order to capture more varied data, the researchers employed a mixed method along with a G-form questionnaire, interviews, and document analysis. The recruited participants comprised of sixty active employees who are currently working as permanent employees in a Chinese company. The participants were recruited randomly. The result indicated that even though English was the employees' preferred foreign language, they preferred to learn it through informal sources (e.g., YouTube, Google Translate, and Grammarly). It was also found that only few departments used English in the company (e.g., marketing, sales department, export- import department). The primary language used to support the company's production was Chinese/Mandarin. The outcome should encourage further research on the factories or businesses owned by non-English nationals (e.g., Japanese, or Korean) so that the critical role of English in the current employment contexts can be verified.

Abstract

Amid Indonesia's vulnerable economic situation, the idea of finding jobs overseas has evoked numerous responses. The present study scrutinized the English literature students’ perceptions regarding potential migration abroad, the countries where they want to work, and the language they need. The study was driven by the hypothesis that English language skill might be needed more abroad than in the Indonesian context. Up to this time, the government has strived to solve Indonesian unemployment, which continuously increases annually. Finding a job overseas can be an alternative to alleviating the government's economic burden and reducing the number of unemployed in Indonesia simultaneously. The present study employed a mixed method involving seventy-five English literature students. The participants were recruited conveniently from the English classes where the researchers teach. The instrument used was a written questionnaire followed by interviews with selected participants. The findings indicated that the participants had more ideas about visiting Asian countries. Furthermore, Europe, Arabia, Canada, and North America are the following countries that have the most potential to visit. The participants were also convinced that using English in Asian countries would be helpful, even though other Asian languages might be more suitable for use in the Asian continent than English. Other languages that the participants perceived essential to learn are Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, and German. The study highlights the potential migration among educated Indonesians (i.e., English literature/English students), which would incur multiple benefits if substantial changes were enacted by authority.

Abstract

This study examines the status of Indonesian local languages, emphasizing their role in identity preservation and linguistic diversity across the archipelago. Despite their cultural significance, local languages often receive less appreciation than international languages, which are perceived to have greater socioeconomic value. Current research on Indonesian local languages is limited, typically focusing on linguistic aspects in isolation. This study takes a broader approach, considering factors such as pedagogy, employability, and publicity. A mixed-method approach was used, including questionnaires, interviews, and documentary analysis to gather data from 60 high school students. The results show that, despite the absence of local language instruction, students held positive attitudes toward their local languages and actively used them outside of school. However, regarding employability, students believed that proficiency in local languages would not significantly improve their job prospects. They also recognized the importance of local language visibility in media, as it could stimulate public interest and enhance the economic value of these languages. The study highlights the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing local language use and its potential benefits.

Abstract

As part of the annual community service to help improve the school students' English skills, Technocrat Foreign Language School Tangerang conducted a community service in The Four State Vocational High School in Tangerang Regency, Banten. The English training emphasized improving the students' English communicative skills and their interest in practicing the language. The survey research, which succeeded in the training, indicated some important findings, such as the positive perceptions toward the English training, the perceived importance of English for the student's future careers, the importance of English subjects/courses in higher education as well as in employment. Specifically, the role of English in the hospitality, service, retail, and creative industry will be imperative. Of the four skills, speaking was deemed the most important skill to learn for employment. Concerning their future career, the students expected to have a non-English teaching career after graduating from college. The present study attempted to highlight the issue of the English training, potential employability, and the perceived important skill needed by the vocational high school graduates so that they can have more chances to work in the above industries. Further study should identifiy more skills specifically needed in the above industries so that the amount of unemployment from vocational high school graduates can be reduced.
