Abstract

Studies on Islamic education and Islamic propagation (dakwa) have not addressed the aspect of how particular actors fund their missions in Islamic education and dakwa. Based on a case study at Hidayatullah Islamic boarding school or Pesantren Hidayatullah, this article tries to correlate the issue of public fundraising and the financing of Islamic education and dakwa mission in contemporary Indonesia. Pesantren Hidayatullah conducts public fundraising program by forming a charity organization, namely Baitul Maal Hidayatullah (BMH). The finding reveals that the majority of the fund raised from public is used to finance Hidayatullah’s schools and dakwa missions. This finding is in contrast to what have been suggested by other studies stating that charitable fund is supposed to be distributed back to the community based on the need criteria. Keywords:Public Fundrising, Islamic Education, Dakwa’

Abstract

Artikel ini mendiskusikan bagaimana para perempuan pengusaha memanfaatkan media digital sebagai peluang kewirausahaan baru, serta bagaimana mereka menegosiasikan aktifitas ekonomi tersebut dengan peran mereka sebagai istri dan ibu. Berdasarkan riset lapangan di Yogyakarta dengan menggabungkan metode observasi daring atas beberapa akun Instagram milik perempuan pengusaha dan wawancara langsung dengan mereka, riset ini menemukan bahwa ekonomi digital telah menjadi peluang kewirausahaan baru bagi para perempuan pengusaha untuk menjangkau pasar yang lebih luas tanpa mengabaikan peran mereka sebagai istri/ibu. Namun mereka dituntut untuk terus berinovasi dan memahami trend pasar yang terus berubah serta selalu meningkatkan penguasaan teknologi demi hasil yang maksimal. Pada saat yang sama, mereka juga harus mampu menegosiasikan peran domestik dan publik mereka dengan suami. Riset ini menemukan bahwa negosiasi yang berhasil umumnya bertumpu pada kesepakatan dengan suami dalam mengelola waktu, tetap menempatkan keluarga sebagai prioritas, dan memposisikan suami sebagai mitra kerja. Berdasarkan temuan ini, penulis berargumen bahwa ekonomi digital menyediakan peluang kewirausahaan baru yang memungkinkan kaum perempuan berperan di ranah domestik dan publik secara neogotiable dan fluid (cair atau lentur).

Abstract

This article discusses the history of pesantren as an educational institution in the changing Indonesian context, and provides a snapshot on their current development and enrolment trends. It aims to provide an updated comprehension on Indonesian pesantren, which is an important aspect in understanding the contemporary development of Islam in Indonesia. The data presented here is based on systematic review of existing literature and policy documents, interviews with key policy makers, and observation in some pesantren. I argue that Indonesian pesantren have continued to grow over different historical periods due to their adaptability in the changing contexts. Such adaptability is seen in their adoption of modern schooling system, their incorporation of non-religious subjects into their curricula, as well as their dynamic integration into the national education system.

Abstract

For the Bugis people in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) is a religious practice that illustrates a balance between practicing Islamic teachings and preserving local culture. This article explores the construction of meaning in hajj practices among Bugis women through various rituals and attributes, including wearing hajj attire. Data were collected through fieldwork in Bone District, South Sulawesi in which we conducted interviews with Bugis women of different ages, levels of education, and social classes who had made the pilgrimage. Through a phenomenological approach, we found that the practice of Bugis hajj rituals, such as mappatoppo, is common among all Bugis women across different groups. However, the hajj attire varies and can be categorized into traditional, modern, and moderate. The variations are influenced by the level of education, access to information and technology, social status, knowledge of the Islamic religion, occupation, kinship and association, and generational groups. We argued hajj attire carries different functions for different Bugis women, i.e., social control, traditional identity, representation of past political memory, social status and legitimacy, and markers of exclusivity. This study contributes to the global talk about the mix between religious and cultural expression by showing a complex continuity and changes of the expression amid the modernization the Bugis people experience.

Abstract

The case of blasphemy charges against Basuki Cahaya Purnama, also known as Ahok, in Jakarta in 2017 sparked a wave of mass protests, calling themselves the 212 Movement. Based on various criteria and characteristics, scholars have labeled it as an Islamic populist movement, which later inspired various articulations of the movement in different locations. This article explores the articulation of this movement in the economic field under the name 212 Mart in Palembang, South Sumatra. Using the framework of Social Movement Theory, there are two main findings. First, the 212 Mart movement attempts to articulate the ideology of Islamic populism as the framing of the movement through identity sentiments and the strengthening of the community’s economy. The ideology of Islamic populism positions the Muslim community as socially and economically marginalized. Second, the failure of the experimentation of Islamic populism in the 212 Mart movement is attributed to the weakening of economic opportunities and the structure of political opportunities. Thus, this article has contributed to studying Islamic populism through social movement theory by revealing the failure of the 212 Mart movement in Palembang.
