Abstract

The three lines methods in hybrid rice have disadvantages in seed production procedures that result in low seed yield. Low levels of natural crosses (outcrossing) is one of the causes of low seed yield in hybrid seed production. GA3 application and proper spacing , expected to improve  of F1 hybrid seed production. The experimental design used was Split Plot design with three replications. The main plot was doses of GA3 application consist of 0, 200 ppm and 300 ppm. The subplot was row ratios of restores:CMS i,e 2R:8A, 2R:12A; 2R:16A. The material used is parental lines of  HIPA 14. The results showed that GA3 application was able to increased plant height of parental lines (CMS and restorer), number of productive tillers, exterted panicle and stigma also outcrossing rate at seed production of HIPA 14. Abstract

Adoption of the hybrid rice varieties by farmers is often impaired by the high price of hybrid seed, due to low yields in hybrid seed production fields. Female outcrossing ability and female hybrid seed production ability, defined as the rate of filled spikelets of the male sterile line and as its grain yield under outcrossing, respectively, determine plant traits for hybrid seed yield. We identified an morphological characters and outcrossing rate ability of 6 hybrid rice combination that affect grain yield of hybrid rice seed production. The experiment conducted in 3 locations i.e. Subang, Malang, and Ungaran districts during dry season of 2016. Subang is the best location to hybrid rice seed production with the highest average of grain yield. Hipa 19 was the hybrid varieties having > 1 ton/ha grain yield highest that others. The important agronomic characteristics that affected of F1 grain yield i.e. plant height, number productive tillers, number of filled grains, exerted panicle rate, dan outcrossing rate. Correlations between number of filled grains, outcrossing rate, and grain yield were tight and highly significant. High yield potential and cost-effective for hybrid seed production can be achieved using hybrid rice with high outcrossing rate and suitable condition of an environment.

Abstract

Selection of parents based on their combining ability is an effective approach in hybrid breeding. Four CMS and four restorer lines were crossed in line x tester mating design to obtain 16 F1 hybrids rice. The 8 parental lines and 16 hybrids rice were planted in randomized complete block design with three replications at Kuningan and Muara field station of ICRR during 2012-2013. The results revealed that mean squares for GCA were significant for number of fertile spikelet per panicle, a thousand-grains weight, and 50% days of flowering. Mean squares for SCA were significant for plant height and grain yield. Parental lines exhibited the highest GCA effects for GMJ12A (line) and CRS703 (tester) for grain yield trait and revealed good potential to be used as parents for hybrid rice. Among all the crosses, GMJ6A/CRS707 and GMJ12A/CRS707 showed the greatest positive SCA effects for grain yield and had heterosis over better parent and midparent.

Abstract

Hybrid seed production is the important key in the commercialization and development of hybrid rice. The successful of hybrid rice development through the exploitation of heterosis phenomenon in China encouraged other countries including Indonesia to develop hybrid rice. Research conducted at Indonesian Center for Rice Research (ICRR) indicated that the development of hybrid rice technology offered opportunities for increasing rice yields by 15-20% compared to inbred varieties. The high cost of hybrid seed is one of the constraints in the adoption of hybrid rice technology. This is primarily attributed to the low hybrid seed yield which is around 1-1.5 t/ha. This article introduces the results of research and development especially in hybrid rice seed production based on genetic of parental lines of hybrid and its field management. The constraints and opportunities of hybrid seed industry in Indonesia also discussed in this article.Keywords: Hybrid rice, seed production, progress, constraint, opportunity. AbstrakProduksi benih merupakan kunci penting dalam keberhasilan komersialisasi dan pengembangan padi hibrida. Keberhasilan Cina mengembangkan padi hibrida dengan memanfaatkan fenomena vigor hibrida (heterosis) telah mendorong negara lain termasuk Indonesia untuk mengembangkannya. Hasil Penelitian di Balai Besar Penelitian Tanaman Padi (BB Padi) menunjukkan penggunaan teknologi padi hibrida memberikan peluang peningkatan hasil 15-20% dibandingkan dengan varietas inbrida. Harga benih yang tinggi menjadi salah satu tantangan dalam adopsi padi hibrida. Hal ini disebabkan oleh produksi benih F1 yang hanya berkisar 1-1,5 t/ha. Artikel ini memaparkan hasil penelitian produksi benih padi hibrida, terutama berdasarkan genetik galur tetua hibrida dan teknis budidaya. Kendala dan peluang industri benih padi hibrida, strategi pengembangan produksi benih dan pembangunan industri benih padi hibrida di Indonesia juga merupakan bagian dari diskusi penting dalam artikel ini.Kata kunci: Padi hibrida, produksi benih, kemajuan, tantangan, pengembangan
