Abstract

The whale shark tourism in Saleh Bay, Indonesia, has become a significant attraction for both domestic and international visitors, providing substantial economic benefits to the local community. However, this increase in tourism activity has raised concerns about its environmental impacts. This study conducts a comprehensive literature review to assess the environmental impacts of whale shark tourism in Saleh Bay and explores strategies for achieving sustainable tourism practices. Findings indicate that whale shark tourism has led to behavioral disturbances in whale sharks, including changes in feeding and migratory patterns, as well as increased stress levels. Additionally, tourism activities have contributed to coral reef degradation and increased marine pollution. The study identifies key measures for mitigating these impacts, including enhanced tourist education, stringent regulations, environmentally-friendly infrastructure development, and community involvement. The recommendations aim to balance the economic benefits of whale shark tourism with the need for effective environmental conservation. This review provides a foundation for further research and policy development to support sustainable tourism in Saleh Bay, ensuring the protection of marine ecosystems while promoting local socio-economic growth.

Abstract

Political intolerance—the unwillingness to accept the political freedom of those with differing views—has become an increasingly significant issue in Indonesia in recent years. The country began holding free and fair elections at the national level in 2004, with regional elections following shortly thereafter. Despite this progress, at least two surveys show that the level of political intolerance in Indonesia increased over time, peaking between 2017 and 2019. Several scholars have examined this issue in Indonesia through various perspectives, including online political intolerance. Others used the Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) method to measure the level of intolerance among particular groups. This research aims to expand the scholarship on political intolerance by examining the SDO levels among Islamists in Greater Jakarta, and whether the SDO levels positively correlate with their political intolerance. Using an explanatory approach with quantitative statistical analysis and qualitative in-depth interviews, this study examines the relationship between SDO levels and political intolerance. This study involves 265 Islamists in the Greater Jakarta region. The findings show that there is a positive correlation between the SDO levels and political intolerance, confirming the findings of previous studies that political intolerance usually parallels, and is built up by, higher levels of SDO among individuals. This is the first large study to investigate the level of SDO among Islamists in Jakarta.

Abstract

This study investigates the causal relationship between women’s participation in parliament and the proportion of women with secondary education on the global adolescent birth rate. Utilizing data from the United Nations Development Programme’s Gender Inequality Index, the research adopts a quantitative, explanatory design to examine how these independent variables influence adolescent birth rates across countries. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results reveal a divergent pattern: Women’s participation in parliament (X1) shows a positive causal relationship with the adolescent birth rate (coefficient = 0.009547). In contrast, the proportion of women with secondary education (X2) demonstrates a statistically significant negative relationship (coefficient = -0.730165). These findings indicate that contrary to expectations, increased parliamentary representation alone does not significantly contribute to reducing adolescent birth rates. In contrast, a higher percentage of women receiving secondary education is significantly associated with lower adolescent birth rates. These results underscore the urgent need to prioritize female education as a more effective strategy for addressing adolescent fertility globally. While political representation remains important for broader gender equality goals, this study contributes to the existing literature by highlighting that educational attainment among women has a more direct and measurable impact on adolescent reproductive outcomes. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, international development agencies, and gender equity advocates seeking data-driven approaches to reduce adolescent births and improve gender-sensitive health and education policies.
