Abstract

Amidst the noisy discourse of disruption era, the orientation of education in Indonesia is in a crossed way. On the one hand, by the presidential regulation number 87 on 2017, the government wants indonesian education to foster its character education. On the other hand, the more pragmatic approach to prepare skill-based system of education as the answer to industrial demands is obvious in the more recent government discourse. Based on this background, this qualitative research tries to present liberal arts education paradigm as an alternative way to today?s form of education. By studying relevant literature resources, and by evaluating its practice in Zaytuna College as the case, this research argues that liberal arts education is in line with core principles in Islamic education which views human as holistic creatures with many potentials.

Abstract

Despite having identical demographic composition with the presence of the Muslim majority, the expression of Islam in Indonesia and Malaysia has a different nuance. Islam in Indonesia is more varied and open, while Islam in Malaysia is more centralized and formal. These different expressions must be influenced by the differences of Islamic education in the two countries. This study intends to examine the Islamic education system in Indonesia and Malaysia by describing the history of its development. By referring to library sources, this study conducted a qualitative analysis with the help of Michel Foucault's genealogical theory. With this theory, the author reveals the changes that have occurred throughout the history of Islamic education in Indonesia and Malaysia. This study found that Islamic education in Indonesia and Malaysia departed from the same origin: traditional Islamic learning. Differences begin to emerge when the British government accommodated Islamic education in the vernacular education system in Malaysia, while the Dutch marginalized Islamic education in Indonesia. The Malaysian government further integrated Islamic education into the national education system, while the Indonesian government recognized Islamic education in an independent form outside of state management. As a result, Islamic education in Indonesia has developed adaptively to the temporal challenges by producing diverse forms of education, while Islamic education in Malaysia is stagnating because of the politization. Government policy also influenced this adaptive character where the strict approach of the Dutch colonial government required Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia to be more independent and creative.

These three elements are of social ethics from the Qur'an Surah Ali Imran 110. This idea and Kuntowijoyo's thoughts in general were very thick with a sociological element. Based on this background, this study attempts to scrutiny whether there is sufistic dimensions of in Kuntowijoyo's thought by focusing on his prophetic social ethical ideas. The research was conducted by doing content analysis of Kuntowijoyo's works and interpreting in heuristic hermeneutics way. The writer found the trilogy of humanization, liberation, and transcendence in Kuntowijoyo's thought reflects the trilogy of purification of the soul in moral Sufism, namely takhalli, tahalli and tajalli which are applied to the social realm.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the state of the art of Islamic modernity research using a VOSviewer bibliometric study. The research draws on the 5-year (2020-2025) SCOPUS database, utilizing the keyword "Islamic Modernity." The results were analyzed descriptively and put into a visualization. In each criterion, when possible, regional interpretations are presented to support further analysis. Afterwards, a cross-sectional critical discourse analysis is conducted heuristically. The findings indicate that the number of publications on "Islamic modernity" increases significantly from 2023 to 2024, and this trend continues into 2025. It also suggests that Islamic modernity discourse falls into two poles of intellectual motives: one, more epistemological in the form of theory construction, and the other, more political, as it pays more attention to political issues by scrutinizing the internal dynamics of Islamic society through a political interpretation. Thus, future research could contribute to critiquing the Eurocentric paradigm and foster epistemic justice in the global theory of knowledge.

Abstract

Rather than cultivating critical thinking, the ease of access to information in digital world, leads many students into confusion. By developing Taha Abdurrahman’s theory of subject and Linda Zagzebski’s intellectual virtues, this study aims to propose an onto-ethical approach to address students learning problem caused by information overload. Using library-based qualitative research, the authors compare and synthesis Taha’s view on subject and Zagzebski’s intellectual virtue to foster a critical-responsible digital subject. Tahaian notion of subject, which received ethico-spiritual commitment through transcendental encounter with God, is proposed as a resilient subject for information overload. Authors argue that to overcome information overload among students, the praxis of digital engagement must be altered from information seeking activity towards a responsible ethical action. To engage in digital activities is to responsibly executes certain intellectual virtues in order to do something ethical. The two-folded attributes of Tahaian subject: criticism and responsibility are essential in fostering an ethical-aware autonomous learner. Complementing this framework, this article engages through Linda Zagzebski’s theory of intellectual virtues, to tackle digital-related pedagogical problems.
