Abstract

The widespread penetration of digital communication, especially social media, in every aspect of life, provides a means for the women's movement to increase women’s empowerment. 'Aisyiyah, one of Indonesia's largest women's organizations, has also started using social media platforms. Therefore, this research aims to find out how digital communication is used by 'Aisyiyah to promote women's awareness of the issues they face, build the 'Aisyiyah movement's public identity, and mobilize collective actions. This single-instrumental case study research was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic when digital communication became much more important due to restrictions on mobility and offline meetings. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with Aisyiyah's media team and document reviews of its official social media accounts (Instagram and YouTube). This research shows that 'Aisyiyah has started to use a digital storytelling perspective in empowerment initiatives related to women's issues (such as reproductive health, violence against women, and the economy). In addition, strengthening the organization's identity in public becomes a significant theme in 'Aisyiyah's digital communication. Thus, digital communication efforts for collective action should catch up, indicating, in general, that women's movements, especially in Indonesia, still need to form a networked social movement.

Abstract

Religiously motivated radical extremism has been a major source of concern around the world, including Indonesia. Governments, communities, and civil society organizations (CSOs) are launching a variety of initiatives to prevent and combat violent extremism (P/CVE), including the use of various media platforms. This study looks at how two CSOs in Indonesia, Kreasi Prasasti Perdamaian (KPP) and Peace Generation (PeaceGen), handle various media (transmedia organizing) in P/CVE initiatives. Data collection included (1) in-depth interviews with each CSO's team members, (2) observation of some of their activities, and (3) document analysis of various media products. The findings of this study show that the transmedia organizing of both CSOs has paved the way for increased participation from the movement base, thereby strengthening social movement identity. This research contributes to the view of the critical role and understanding of the media in preventing and counteracting violent extremism due to the increasingly strong influence of the media in everyday life and the fact that terrorist and radical organizations also use the media for propaganda and recruitment.

Abstract

This article examines the conceptual landscape of digital religion studies through the perspective of media and communication research. Over the past two decades, digital religion has developed as an interdisciplinary field that explores how religious practices, identities, communities, and authorities are shaped within the convergence of online and offline spaces. This study employs a conceptual review method, a qualitative approach to literature review in which the researcher surveys various sources related to a perspective or theory and then formulates a conceptual map based on that exploration. The discussion highlights four theoretical frameworks commonly used by scholars with a media studies background: mediatization, mediation, social shaping of technology, and media ecology. Each framework provides a different lens on the interaction between digital media and religious practices—whether emphasizing technological determinism or human agency. The study also maps six key areas of digital religion research: authority, ritual, identity, community, embodiment, and the conceptualization of religion itself. Furthermore, it identifies two major issues for future inquiry. First, the increasingly blurred boundaries between digital and physical spaces call for research on hybrid environments where online and offline religious practices intertwine. Second, the emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and immersive virtual reality raises profound ethical and cultural questions regarding the future of religion and human–technology relations. By situating digital religion within the framework of media studies, this article seeks to provide a foundation for scholars, particularly in Indonesia, to contribute to global discourse on religion in the digital era.

Abstract

The Japanese occupation of East Asia during World War II was accompanied by its propaganda targeting the local population. In Indonesia, the military government, among other things, published Djawa Baroe, a fortnightly magazine published from January 1, 1943, to August 1, 1945. Compared to other magazines, this bilingual magazine (in Japanese and Bahasa Indonesia) Djawa Baroe was unique: it featured ample photographs and illustrations. Qualitative content analysis method enables this study to find the meaning of a theme in its holistic political, social, and cultural contexts beyond the number of its occurrences in the text offered by quantitative content analysis. All the issues of Djawa Baroe are examined in detail and reiteratively. Six themes can be found in Djawa Baroe, i.e., the friendship between Japanese and Indonesians, the description of Japanese military prowess, the exaltation of nationalism, and the preparation for the war, the evil nature of Western power, the role of women in society, and entertainment. The study concludes that along with the development of the Pacific War that turned against the Japanese, Djawa Baroe moved its emphasis on long-range goals at the high psychological level to influence and win the hearts and minds of Indonesian people, to a more immediate result and practical guide in facing the imminent war. On the other hand, against the original intention of the Japanese propaganda, Djawa Baroe may have helped its educated readers to imagine their future nation-state, Indonesia.
