Abstract

This study aims to analyze the challenges of achieving indicators of attitude competency assessment stages on graduate standards. This is important to discuss to ensure the achievement of an institution in eight National Education Standards. This research method uses participatory descriptive research. This research was conducted at As-Salam Mts Bandung. The instrument used refers to seven indicators of graduate standards in the form of interview guidelines. The conclusions of this study are (1) the profile of the achievement of the Graduate Standard indicator shows varying results with an average achievement of 91%. (2) indicators that have not reached the maximum score are the absence of literacy training and seminars for students at school. The recommendations of the results of this study need an in-depth study of the use of the results of assessment of graduate indicators using more authentic instruments. Keywords: Graduate Standards. Abstract

In communication, the speakers should be polite toward the hearers by considering their social level, age, situation, and condition. The current study focused on the use of politeness strategies, especially in command. The aims of the study are to identify the types of sentence in command, the applied of politeness strategies, and to investigate the factors that influence the main characters in applying politeness strategies in command. The data were politeness utterances in command used by main character in 3 drama movies: “Facing the Giants”, “Dangerous Minds”, and “The Ron Clark Story”. The data were analyzed using politeness strategies purposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The results of this study shown that there are 2 forms of command: declarative sentence and imperative sentence. The characters applied 2 types of politeness strategy in giving command: bald on record (24 data) and positive politeness (4 data). The factors that influenced the main characters in applying politeness strategies in command were the main characters, as the speakers, have higher status than the hearers, the size of imposition between the speakers and the hearers were small, and the situation were urgent and emergency in which the speakers and the hearers involved.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of grammatical understanding, to identify common grammatical errors made by learners of the English Language Education Study Program at the UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta at early-level, as seen from statistical analysis, and to examine the factors influencing learners’ grammatical errors. This study used mix method to analyze the data. The sample of the study was 72 learners of English Education Program, Faculty of Adab and Language, UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. The results showed that the level of grammar understanding at early-level learners of English Education Program at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta was sufficient level. From the analysis results it was found that learners often made errors in the adjective component (2.93), adverb (2.90), and action adverb (2.79). There are four factors that influence grammar mastery, namely motivation, learning strategies and study habits, lecturers’ teaching methods, and learning environment and academic support.
