Abstract

This study aims to determine the communication strategy and communicationstrategy barriers used by the North Sumatra Education Quality Assurance Institute as one of the government agencies domiciled in each province and responsible for implementing quality assurance as an extension of the central government in the implementation of the Internal Quality Assurance System to meet and improve the quality of education. This research was carried out at SMP Negeri 4 Tanjung Morawa and SMP Negeri 2 Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province. The data is collected through interviews, observations and analyzed using descriptive analysis methods with a qualitative approach. This study uses Harold Lasswell?s Communication Theory. The result showed that the communication strategy of the North Sumatra Education Quality Assurance Institute takes the form of coordination meetings, technical guidance, assistance, monitoring and evaluation. Obstacles that arise in carrying out the communication strategy are the ability to operate technology, the location of the implementation of technical guidance and power outages (technical barriers); the large number of unfamiliar terms in the delivery of material makes it difficult for participants to understand the material (semantic barriers); and the lack of willingness of the school or the Education Quality Assurance Team to change (behavioral barriers).

Abstract

This study aims to explain the communication pattern and relationship between parents and children (human bonding) in a long-distance relationship between parents and children in Medan. Attachment theory is used to explain the dynamics of relationships. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The research resource persons were six pairs of parents and children and two triangulators: a psychologist and a coordinator of adolescent resilience development National Population and Family Planning Board or Badan Kependudukan dan Keluarga Berencana Nasional (BKKBN) North Sumatra Province. The results showed that human bonding communication in long-distance relationships between parents and children took place with limited communication intensity. Communication is dominated and controlled by parents. There are many restrictions on children, lack of support, limited freedom of expression, imbalances in communication, strict control, and authoritarian attitudes of parents. This leads to a lack of quality of relationship between parents and children. This condition occurs in the communication process that forms monopoly communication patterns (monopoly pattern communication) and unbalanced split communication patterns (unbalanced split pattern communication); the formation of human bonding in long-distance relationships between parents and children is based on emotional relationships. Communication techniques of parents to children tend to be coercive. The child must obey many things. Human bonding in a long-distance relationship creates a relationship that is not harmonious and makes children feel insecure (insecure attachment).

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyze the tutor communication pattern through the use of the "one student one tutor" method at the SAS English Laboratory LKP and to identify its benefits for students' understanding and learning motivation. This type of research uses a qualitative approach. Data collection through observation, interviews and literature review. The research data was processed using qualitative analysis that refers to interpersonal communication theory. The results of the study showed that tutors used a combination of verbal and nonverbal communication to convey material, build closer interactions with students, and increase learning effectiveness. Factors such as communication intensity, use of learning media, and strategies to overcome communication barriers are very useful in building an active and productive learning atmosphere. This finding confirms that effective tutor communication patterns can increase students' motivation and understanding of English learning materials. Therefore, the use of more innovative communication techniques and the use of learning media are needed to support the success of the "one student one tutor" method.

Abstract

Kenduri , a form of slametan ritual rooted in Javanese traditions, integrates religious devotion with cultural and social dimensions. It symbolizes collective identity, sustains moral values, and links individuals to the divine. This study aimed to understand how kenduri functions as a symbolic communication system, transmitting meanings through foods, prayers, spatial arrangements, and adaptive practices. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in a Javanese diaspora community in North Sumatra, employing participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data were coded and thematically analyzed to uncover how participants interpret and negotiate the ritual’s symbolic elements. The results indicate that kenduri ’s constituent symbols—such as bubur merah putih and ingkung—convey notions of purity, spirituality, and life cycles, while seating arrangements and prayer recitations foster communal unity and reinforce moral cohesion. Local adaptations, including the incorporation of regional ingredients, demonstrate kenduri ’s resilience in a pluralistic environment. These findings reveal kenduri as a dynamic communicative event, linking cultural heritage with contemporary realities and maintaining relevance despite historical shifts and demographic changes. By underscoring the ritual’s integrative and adaptive nature, this research advances our understanding of how religious practices generate and convey meaning across diverse contexts. Ultimately, kenduri exemplifies how ritual communication can preserve core values, reinforce community solidarity, and guide spiritual engagement, offering valuable insights for future comparative and interdisciplinary studies.
