Abstract

Depending on the communicator, language can give a wide range of meanings and significance. The Addams Family (2019) is an animation film with a unique communication style for conveying messages and information to the audience. Each of the characters’ conversations has several layers, so the audiences have to interpret the messages from various points of view. The authors try to connect the characters’ conversations from the film with the pragmatic theory to decode the meaning. In addition to pragmatic theory, a semiotic approach to denotative and connotative meanings is also used. Authors utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods to calculate, observe and explore a deeper meaning of language. The result is analyzed Pragmatics from the Addams Family characters as shown in the Addams Family (2019) animated film version.

Abstract

The utilization of online platforms for learning has become increasingly common, although it is still relatively unexplored in specific disciplines such as Art and Design. In the Film and Animation Majors within the Art and Design Faculty, students encounter subjects that necessitate the development of technical proficiency in their learning outcomes and subjects that require in-person discussions to deepen their understanding. Gaining technical proficiency typically requires practical, hands-on practice, which is most effectively facilitated through in-person instruction. This article presents the feedback received from students enrolled in two foundation classes, one practical and one theoretical, regarding their experience with distance learning. The authors collected and analyzed feedback from both types of classes, focusing on participants who provided feedback for both practical and theoretical courses. The outcomes consist of recommendations from the students' perspectives, highlighting the successes and challenges encountered with distance learning in the respective classes. Keywords: distance learning; film; animation; major; technical proficiency skill; online learning.

Abstract

Animation as an art medium comprises many important elements, including the environment. The environment is used to visualize the condition, background, time, location, culture, mood, and atmosphere of certain aspects of animation. Environment design is crucial in creating ‘realistic’ animation; realistic in terms that it is believable through the viewer’s perspective. This article aims to explain the design process of environmental aspects in the “Lost Steps” short animation. “Lost Steps” tells the story of Rahel, a grieving young woman, who lost her steps in the painting world because of her grandmother’s death. This movie focuses on how Rahel goes through her grief to release the emotional baggage that’s eating into her life. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the importance of good interior environment design in order to convey emotions through visuals. In order to explain all of these, the writer decided to use an embodied visual metaphor. This paper uses qualitative analysis techniques in its writing to discuss the environmental aspects of the movie. The result achieved through this paper is that visual metaphor is used in terms of creating layers of meaning, while mise-en-scène is applied through the use of property set, asset design, color, and lighting to visualize these layers of meaning.
