Abstract

persist regarding the depth and credibility of social media-based da’wa, often perceived as superficial and lacking religious authority. This study investigates the case of Habib Husein Ja’far Al-Hadar, a traditionally trained Hadhrami preacher, who has emerged as a prominent digital da’i through his strategic and effective use of Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. The research aims to explore how algorithmic logic, media constraints, and digital culture shape and potentially enhance the reach and substance of da’wa in contemporary Indonesia. Anchored in digital ethnography and qualitative content analysis, the study draws upon online observations and platform analytics to examine how Habib Ja’far optimizes message delivery across social media, navigating technical limitations to convey inclusive, youth-oriented Islamic messages. Findings reveal that beyond religious qualifications, digital fluency—understanding algorithms, audience behavior, and platform affordances—is essential to successful digital da’wa. Habib Ja’far’s approach demonstrates how algorithmic literacy and creative communication can challenge the dichotomy between traditional and modern religious authority. This research contributes to broader discussions on mediatized religion, digital religious authority, and the transformation of Islamic communication in the algorithmic age.

Abstract

The digital culture has made the internet a significant source of knowledge for millennials. The fast access to information has made them associated with instant culture and bandwagon effect: they behave and adapt to popular trends and demand instant pleasurable activities. In this case, the phenomenon influences how they seek religious advice (fatwa). Pleasure and piety become parts of millennials’ religiosity: they want to look pious yet casual and trendy. This article closely examines a millennial hadrami-descent preacher, Habib Ja‘far. It investigates how he builds his religious authority among millennials and the youth by cultivating his online and fun fatwas. Habib Ja‘far’s YouTube channel is the main data source in this case. Employing qualitative research with netnography method and Slama’s theory on “mediated intimacy”, This study found that a mufti (a man who gives religious advice) must adapt to the changes in how people seek religious advice (fatwa) to gain authority. The more skilled he is at adapting, the more authoritative he will be. In Habib Ja‘far case, his adaptability to youth culture and social media has made him a new religious authority. His da’wa model using social media by collaborating with various speakers from different perspectives can engage a wider audience and make da’wa more entertaining, accepted, and informative toward the fun and easy side of religion without hurting its sacredness.

Abstract

Abstract: The aspect of the beauty of language ('ijaz lughawi) is one of the first miracles that emerged from the Qur'an. This aligns with the audience to whom the Qur'an was revealed around 14 centuries ago: people who are very close to the literary tradition. Interestingly, scholars of the Qur'an, from classical to contemporary, see this as an opportunity for studies and still developing and producing various monumental works. Through this paper, the author tries to trace chronologically how the Al-Qur'an and literature meet to become an approach in interpreting the Al-Qur'an. The research in this paper is carried out through essential matters by looking at how the Qur'an was revealed in Arab society, the interpretation practices carried out by the Prophet and his companions, to the contact of the Qur'an with modern literature. This study uses a socio-historical approach by looking at the macro-cultural context of early Arab society and the process of interpretation of the earlier era carried out by the Prophet, companions and tabi'in. This study argues that the emergence of a model of literary interpretation of the Qur'an is closely related to the traditions and culture of Arab society, which are close to literary traditions. Furthermore, this research contributes to the history of interpretation, especially in tracking the various approaches that appear in the study of the Quran.

Abstract

Literary approaches to Qur’anic narratives are frequently characterized in contemporary scholarship as methodological responses to the predominance of historical-positivist interpretations. Nevertheless, existing research often treats literary tafsīr as a relatively homogeneous paradigm, paying insufficient attention to the epistemological distinctions underlying approaches that appear methodologically analogous. As a result, significant divergences concerning conceptions of revelatory truth, the role of history, and interpretive authority within literary readings of the Qurʾān remain inadequately examined. This lacuna is particularly evident in studies of Muḥammad Aḥmad Khalafullāh and A.H. Johns, who are commonly categorized together as proponents of literary interpretation despite embodying distinct epistemological orientations. This article seeks to address this gap through a critical comparative analysis of Khalafullāh’s literary–historical critique and Johns’ narrative criticism in their interpretations of Qur’anic narratives. Employing qualitative library research and comparative textual analysis, the study scrutinizes their principal works, with particular emphasis on their methodological applications to the stories of the Companions of the Cave and the Prophet Job. The findings demonstrate that a shared rejection of positivist historicism does not yield a unified conception of truth. Khalafullāh locates the truth of Qur’anic narratives in their communicative purpose and moral efficacy, whereas Johns defines truth in terms of narrative coherence shaped by the processes of revelation and reader engagement. This article contends that such epistemological tension constitutes an internal boundary within literary tafsīr itself. The study highlights the necessity for a more epistemologically reflective framework for literary interpretation—one that harmonizes methodological innovation with theological responsibility in contemporary Qur’anic studies.
