Abstract

Stepfather–stepdaughter relationship quality is linked to the child’s psychological well-being and stepfamily stability. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the dynamics of these relationships among sociodemographically diverse stepfamilies including families in different cultures. The aim of this research was to explore two Indonesian young women’s interpretations of the quality of their relationships with their stepfathers. The phenomenological study was conducted via interviews, and the women discussed their experiences in depth. The women’s perceptions of the quality of their connections with their stepfathers were primarily influenced by their stepfathers’ to build the relationships. The five dimensions of the theory of relationship quality were applied to assessing the women’s relationships with their stepfathers, and both women reported their relationships as largely negative, although one did have some positive memories. Suggestions are offered for future research that can expand on these findings, for instance through collecting data from all involved biological parents and stepparents.

Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin disease that generally appears from infancy to adulthood and is more common in women. People with AD may experience physical, psychological, and social impacts that disrupt their everyday lives. Those impacts may affect their quality of life, hence people with AD need self-compassion to face their condition. Self-compassion has its negative and positive components, uncompassionate and compassionate response. This research aims to understand self-compassion of women in early adulthood with AD since toddlers. Descriptive phenomenology is used as a research method. Results showed that self-compassion tends to be dynamic in each of the participants. Participants were more likely to show uncompassionate responses when their AD relapses, while compassionate responses were shown when they have better skin condition. Self-compassion was found to help participants in accepting and giving love to themselves when facing various conditions, so that they function better in their daily lives. Future research could delve more into the impact of family’s experience to one’s self-compassion. Support systems can be helpful for individuals with AD to share their sufferings.

Abstract

Abstract Physical and psychological abuse perpetrated by fathers toward daughters can have long-term impacts on emotional, social, and relational development. Such experiences influence women’s capacity to form intimate relationships and their readiness for marriage in early adulthood. This study aims to describe the marriage readiness of young adult women who have experienced physical and psychological abuse from their fathers. A descriptive qualitative approach was applied, involving two young adult female participants who experienced paternal abuse, witnessed similar violence against their mothers, and were preparing for marriage. Participants were selected using homogeneous purposive sampling; data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis, consisting of coding, theme identification, and validation through member checking. The findings showed that both participants were financially ready but faced challenges in emotional and social aspects. One participant demonstrated higher readiness through self-reflection, emotional regulation, and openness to professional support, while the other showed limited readiness due to reproducing unhealthy relationship patterns from her parents’ marriage. These findings underline the importance of psychological support, premarital counseling, and trauma-informed interventions to assist women who have experienced familial violence in developing balanced, emotionally mature, and equitable relationships. Moreover, the study contributes theoretically by expanding understanding of how domestic violence influences marital readiness and relational development in early adulthood.
