Abstract

This article is a writing based on a research on tolerance and diversity in Tangerang City. The objectives of this writing is to describe social relations between groups with different ethnic and religious backgrounds by unfolding and reflecting boundaries of identity built by these groups. This writing argues that decentralization as a context, in which tolerance, ethnic identity and democratization has worked as a new arena for repositioning and redefintion the relations between groups at local level. The State (in this particular is the Local Government) is actually play a role as an agent that reconstructs the relations between ethnic and religious groups; and some of their “policies” has created social exclusion in public spaces. As the research unfold, Tangerang’s City vision to build “akhlaqul karimah” society (a society with pious religious attitudes), has contibuted to the shaping of social relations of the groups with different ethnic and religious backgrounds that shares living spaces in Tangerang, as the local government tries to “color” the city identity by expressing certain religious symbols in open public spaces. The result is a form of social exclusion, experienced and felt by ethnic (and religious) groups, which are the minority in political, economical and socio-cultural arena in Tangerang City. Keywords: social exclusion, Tangerang City vision, identity symbols in public spaces

Abstract

This paper explained the issue of inequality which appears in the process of democratization through the analysis of contestation, negotiation, and the reconstruction of Riau’s identity. Ideally, democratic principles respect equality; however, identity expresses inequality because it defines who is dominant and subordinate in a certain social group through ethnic category and gender identity. It separates the insiders and outsiders with different rights through cultural idioms. Moreover, the identity is not merely applied in the private domain, but also in the public sphere. This paper resulted from research conducted in Riau Province in a periode of decentralization process. The findings shown that In daily practice the collective sentiments manifested in the notion of “Putra Daerah” may create problems, as this notion is not only used as a social category to define collective boundaries, but also as a strategic tool to control access to political and economic power in Riau. Quoting Worsley, Cultural traits are not absolute or simply intellectual categories, but are invoked to provide identities which legitimize claims to rights. They are strategies or weapons in competitions over scarce social goods Worsley (1994). Keyword: contestation, reconstruction of identity, woman perspective, decentralization

Abstract

This article aims to analyze how fading the Chinese diaspora culture from Lasem Chinatown over several generations. Previous studies show that Chinese descent's identity and orientation disappeared due to assimilation with the local community during the new order. In fact, there was a tendency for them not to show their Chinese identity from the beginning. This did not pay enough attention to the local context, social situation, and the cultural heritage of Chinese descent between generations. This case study is conducted by interviews, observation, and document study. The data is analyzed using the NVivo Program. Bauböck & Faist’s new concept of diaspora is used to review the phenomenon of the spread of Chinese descent from Lasem Chinatown. This research shows that the Indonesian Chinese people in Lasem tend to refer to themselves as 'Indonesian Chinese Peranakan and are increasingly detached from their identity relationship with their referent origin, China. Their Chinese identity is starting to fade since Chinese cultural heritage through religious rituals has been largely abandoned. Young Chinese children scattered out of Lasem Chinatown and lost their Chinese identity. The novelty in this research is that the assimilation and integration of Peranakan Chinese into local society are precisely related to the acceptance of the Lasem community, instead of Chinese culture's fading. Keywords: Chinese, Descent, Diaspora, Discontinuity, Dispersed

Abstract

There are several aspects that can be seen in various studies to map the SMEs, that is the focus, methodology, conceptual basis, and the factors influencing it. Based on the focus, various studies SMEs been more centered on aspects of economic rather than socio-cultural. If any, shades of the economy remains strong. In terms of methodology, which is predominantly quantitative, although there are attempts to use qualitative methodology. Conceptually, the idea of the SMEs mostly placed within the framework of development rather than empowerment. In various studies it also appears that various factors affect the performance of SMEs, ranging from access to productive resources, low product specifications, production capacity is limited, and so forth.
