Abstract

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), which was resulted from local compression of the median nerve, was a common entrapment neuropathy. Median nerve gliding exercise required a combination of other conservative therapies to provide optimal clinical improvement in CTS. Radial shock wave therapy (RSWT) was a safe, effective, practical, and non-invasive therapeutic method, can be used as a additional therapy for relieving pain and disability in CTS patients. Objective: This study was aimed to examine the effect of RSWT on median nerve gliding exercise on improving the degree of pain and hand functional scores in patients with CTS. Method: This study was a randomized controlled trial. The subjects were 22 patients from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Polyclinic of RSUD KRMT Wongsonegoro, Semarang. They were divided into 2 groups randomly. The intervention group (n=11) was received RSWT 4 times in median nerve gliding exercise 3 times a day, every day for 4 weeks. The control group (n=11) was received only median nerve gliding exercise. The degrees of pain were measured with a manual algometer and hand functional scores were assessed by BCTQ. Results: The mean of improving pain degree were 2,53 + 0,74 kg/cm2 and 2,38 + 1,25 kg/cm2 in intervention and control group, respectively. An independent t-test showed that there were significant differences in improving pain degree between intervention and control group (p=0,016). The mean of improving BCTQ scores were -11,36 + 4,59 and -6,18 + 3,76 in intervention and control group, respectively. An independent t-test showed that there were significant differences in improving BCTQ scores between intervention and control group (p=0,009). Conclusion: RSWT was improved the degree of pain and increased the hand functional scores of CTS patients who received median nerve gliding exercises. Abstract

Abstract

Background: Physical changes with age affect functional balance. Hatha Yoga, a common balance exercise for the elderly, is not widely known among them, despite its numerous benefits. This study aims to compare Hatha Yoga and elderly exercise to improve functional balance in the elderly. Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial with 26 participants divided into two groups: the Hatha Yoga group (n=13) and the elderly exercise group (n=13). Both groups engaged in three-week exercises for six weeks, with balance measured before and after the intervention using the BBS.Results: There was an increase in BBS scores before and after treatment in the elderly exercise group (p<0.001) and in the Hatha Yoga group (p=0.001). The BBS value of the Hatha Yoga group (42.00 ± 0.58) was higher than that of the elderly exercise group (41.92 ± 0.86) at the start of the study, but the difference was not significant (p = 0.953). At the end of the study, the BBS score in the Hatha Yoga group (55.08 ± 0.86) was higher than that of the elderly exercise (50.54 ± 1.76) and the difference was significant (p <0.001). The difference in the score of Hatha Yoga (13.08 ± 0.76) compared to elderly exercise (8.62 ± 1.61) results in a significant p <0.001.Conclusion: Hatha Yoga improves better balance than elderly exercises to improve the functional balance of eldersKeywords: Berg Balance Scale, eldery, functional balance, Hatha Yoga, senam lansia

Abstract

Introduction: The aging process will cause anatomical and physiological changes in various organs and the body systems, including changes in the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems which then progressively reduce cardiovascular and pulmonary functional capacity, ultimately affecting cardiorespiratory fitness, which can be assessed by a 6-minute walk test/6MWT. Aerobic exercise, including senam lansia, will affect cardiorespiratory fitness by increasing muscles blood flow. Adding expiratory muscle strengthening exercises with a Positive Expiratory Pressure/PEP threshold will strengthen expiratory muscles, the most common muscles affected in aging. This study aims to prove the effectiveness of adding expiratory muscle-strengthening exercises to senam lansia on the cardiorespiratory fitness of the pre-frail elderly. Method: 24 subjects who met the study criteria were randomly divided into an intervention group (n=12) who receive PEP 5 times per week + senam lansia 3 times per week for 6 weeks, and a control group (n=12) who only had senam lansia 3 times per week for 6 weeks. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured before and after intervention using the 6MWT. Result: There was an increase in 6MWT scores before and after treatment in both the intervention group (p=0.002) and the control group (p<0.001). Comparison between groups showed a significant 6MWT score difference in the intervention group (p<0.001). Conclusion: The addition of expiratory muscle strengthening exercises to senam lansia for 6 weeks had a better improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness compared to only having senam lansia.
