Abstract

Daily DI's Way, a print media that was first published on July 4, 2020, was initiated by a former senior Jawa Pos official, Dahlan Iskan. The main focus of this media is news especially the city of Surabaya. There are three main elements in DI's Way Daily, especially on the main page, namely: text, photos / illustrations, and layout. In the photojournalism aspect, researcher analyze how the message is conveyed through photo headlines and captions on the main page of DI's Way Daily through Roland Barthes' semiotic method, using a qualitative approach. Researcher find the implicit picture of the photo headlines and captions of DI'sWay Daily related to the Surabaya City Government July 2020, the first month this media operates. The results of this study provide an overview of the application of social control values carried out by DI's Way Daily, especially in reviewing the Surabaya City Government program. The topic of the City Government's unpreparedness and inadequate handling of Covid-19 pandemic is one of the most highlighted by this daily on July, 2020. The lack of realization of the Surabaya City Government's programs related to education, transportation and infrastructure is also highlighted on the main page. Abstract

In today's era, Artificial Intelligence is increasingly entering into the layers of society, including the historical aspect. This study aims to analyze the accuracy of the illustration of the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence 1945 produced by ChatGPT using a qualitative research approach with Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic analysis research method. This study found that the illustrations produced by AI were historically inaccurate, both in the depiction of the proclaimer, clothing, crowds, and main symbols such as the red and white flag. In addition, although some aspects, such as people's clothing, are close to the facts, most of the illustrations show deficiencies in conveying the true meaning of history. This distortion creates hyperreality, where the resulting visual elements reflect the algorithm's interpretation more than historical facts. This study also highlights that the inaccuracy is due to the limitations of AI in understanding cultural and historical contexts in depth. AI illustrations tend to function as symbolic metaphors rather than factual representations, obscuring the original meaning of events. That makes AI categorized as popular culture, which makes it inauthentic and unoriginal. It shows that AI still requires human intervention to ensure cultural and historical accuracy. This study concludes that the use of AI in representing historical events requires critical oversight to prevent the spread of biased or misleading information. The study emphasizes the need for collaboration between technology and human interpretation to maintain the accuracy of historical information.

Abstract

In Netflix’s 'Ice Cold,' which delves into the murder of Jessica by Mirna, she is often praised and forgiven for her beauty. The documentary even states that the killer is a handsome figure. Women seem to be forced to conform to the image of modern women, who should hold feminist paradigms. Digital television content, as one of the mass media platforms, often portrays women as limited to the role of 'subordinates.' The existence of women is frequently reduced solely to their physical dimensions. It is as if advertisements and television programs would feel empty without the presence of women celebrated as objects. This perspective eventually becomes ingrained in the minds of modern women, largely through the influence of mass media, while commercial demands and the race for the highest ratings are the primary reasons why women continue to be used as complementary objects in various media content.This research employs Roland Barthes' Semiotics to explore how religious education, the male gaze, mass media, and societal views interact in shaping the contemporary perception of the female body. Ironically, the excessive use of patriarchal media has made women feel more liberated to express themselves and actualize their potential in various aspects of life. In this context, elements of religious education play a crucial role, as some Abrahamic religious teachings promote gender hierarchies that can influence society's perception of women and result in gender inequality. The concept of the male gaze is also relevant in this analysis, as it refers to how the male perspective dominates the understanding and representation of women in media, often reducing women to objects of male sexual desire. This research can offer valuable insights into the interconnection of these perspectives and women's potential for increased self-expression within patriarchal-dominated environments.ABSTRAKPada film dokumenter 'Ice Cold' di Netflix yang mengulik tentang pembunuhan Jessica oleh Mirna, ia kerap dipuji dan dimaafkan karena parasnya. Dokumenternya pun menyebutkan bahwa sang pembunuh adalah sosok rupawan. Di luar itu, televisi digital sebagai salah satu medium media massa seringkali menggambarkan perempuan sebagai objek yang terbatas dalam peran 'bawahan'. Eksistensi perempuan sering direduksi hanya pada dimensi fisik mereka. Seakan iklan dan tayangan televisi akan terasa hampa tanpa kehadiran perempuan sebagai objek yang dirayakan. Perempuan seolah-olah dipaksa untuk memenuhi citra perempuan modern yang seharusnya memegang paradigma feminis. Pandangan ini akhirnya tertanam dalam pikiran perempuan modern, sebagian besar melalui pengaruh media massa, sementara tuntutan komersialisme dan perlombaan untuk mendapatkan rating tertinggi menjadi alasan utama mengapa perempuan terus dijadikan objek pelengkap dalam berbagai konten media. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian Semiotika Roland Barthes, menggunakan denotasi, konotasi, serta mitos untuk memahami interaksi kompleks antara unsur didikan agama, ‘male gaze’, dan pengaruh media massa serta dampaknya terhadap persepsi tubuh perempuan dalam masyarakat modern. Ironisnya, penggunaan berlebihan oleh media patriarki telah membuat perempuan merasa lebih bebas untuk mengekspresikan diri dan mengaktualisasikan potensi mereka di berbagai aspek kehidupan. Dalam konteks ini, unsur didikan agama memainkan peran penting, karena beberapa ajaran agama Abrahamik mengajarkan hierarki gender, yang dapat memengaruhi persepsi masyarakat terhadap perempuan dan menimbulkan ketidaksetaraan gender. Konsep ‘male gaze’ juga relevan dalam analisis ini, karena mengacu pada cara pandangan laki-laki mendominasi pemahaman dan representasi perempuan dalam media, sering kali mengurangi perempuan menjadi objek hasrat seksual laki-laki. Temuan dalam penelitian ini dapat memberikan wawasan yang lebih dalam tentang bagaimana pandangan-pandangan ini berkaitan dan bagaimana perempuan dapat lebih leluasa mengekspresikan diri dalam lingkungan yang seringkali didominasi oleh norma-norma patriarki.

Abstract

Situasi politik di Indonesia menghangat di Pemilihan Umum 2024. Keputusan Mahkamah Konstitusi mengubah batas usia pendaftaran calon presiden dan wakil presiden pada 16 Oktober 2023. Hasilnya, Gibran Rakabuming Raka yang masih berusia di bawah 40 tahun berhasil mengikuti konstetasi Pemilu 2024, bersama Prabowo Subianto. Hal ini turut menimbulkan perbedaan pandangan politik antara Jokowi, Gibran, yang justru tidak mendukung Ganjar-Mahfud yang diusung oleh PDIP. Momen ini menjadikan media tidak putus mengulas dan melakukan kritik sosial sebagai salah satu tugasnya. Kondisi inipun terdokumentasi lewat ilustrasi dalam Majalah Tempo di desain sampul edisi “Bara Dalam Sekam Jokowi-Mega” yang sarat akan kritik sosial dalam bahasa visual. Menggunakan metode penelitian analisis semiotika Roland Barthez, yang menganalisis bagaimana makna denotatif, konotatif, hingga mitos di belakang sebuah objek, peneliti melihat Tempo menggambarkan Jokowi meninggalkan partai yang telah membesarkan langkah politiknya selama ini, PDIP Perjuangan. Momen ini punya banyak analisis pertimbangan, mulai dari ketidakcocokan dalam program pemerintahan, adanya pergesekan otoritas dan kekuasaan antara Jokowi dan Megawati, hingga momen Jokowi yang tidak ada menampilkan penolakan akan keikutsertaan anaknya menjadi bakal calon wakil presiden dari Prabowo Subianto. Hasilnya, efek ‘perpindahan’ kubu yang secara tidak langsung dilakukan oleh Jokowi, membuat Prabowo Subianto dan Gibran Rakabuming Raka sah menjadi Capres dan Cawapres terpilih yang ditetapkan oleh KPU. Desain majalah Tempo edisi ini menampilkan kritik media akan tindakan implisit penguasa akan naluri menggunakan aturan negara, untuk menjawab keinginan pribadi. Secara mendalam, kondisi ini mencerminkan feodalisme yang kental pada negara demokrasi.
