Abstract

The portrait of the interaction between Islam and the West (Christianity) is often narrated in a confrontational form. These two civilizations are often positioned as polar opposites. A series of conflicts both in the past such as the Crusades, or other conflicts in the contemporary era, have brought traumatic feelings and protracted mutual suspicion between the two. However, is it true that the relationship between Islam and the West is just a conflict? Is there a cooperative relationship between the political institutions of the Islamic and Christian worlds in history? This study uses historical methods consisting of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, as well as literature study techniques. From the results of the research, it was found that in the 8th century AD, the Abbasid dynasty had established cooperation with the Frankish Empire. The exchange of gifts and ambassadors symbolized the friendship between Caliph Harun Ar-Rashid and King Charlemagne. Politically, Caliph Harun Ar-Rashid supported Charlemagne to disrupt the existence of his fellow Muslim rivals, namely the Umayyad dynasty II in Andalusia. On the other hand, Charlemagne supported Harun Ar-Rashid in his conflict with the Byzantine Empire, the rival of the Frankish Empire among Christians. From these conditions, it can be concluded that at certain moments the Islamic world and the West can interact in a harmonious spectrum. This collaborative condition is also present in historical fragments, which are important to be narrated amidst the domination of confrontational historical narratives.

Abstract

The Saung Budaya Sumedang (Sabusu) has played a pivotal role as a center for arts and culture in Jatinangor, Sumedang Regency, since its establishment in 2000. This study aims to examine the historical development of Sabusu, analyzing its contributions to preserving local arts and culture amidst evolving social dynamics from 2000 to 2023. Employing historical research methods encompassing heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the study draws on primary and secondary data, including interviews, videos, and related academic literature. Results indicate that Sabusu has undergone significant transformations, including name changes and shifts in management. Initially a hub for traditional arts, Sabusu faced challenges due to privatization and commercialization, leading to diminished cultural activities. However, since 2019, revitalization efforts by the Ibu Djati Foundation have restored its role as a cultural and educational space. Despite facing modern challenges such as globalization and shifting youth interests, Sabusu continues to adapt by organizing traditional art programs and fostering community engagement. This study underscores the importance of Sabusu as a model for cultural preservation and its potential to inspire similar initiatives in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the contribution of Kiblat magazine to anti-communist propaganda during Indonesia's political transition (1966–1967). Drawing upon Harold D. Lasswell's communication model of propaganda—who says what in which channel to whom with what effect—this research reveals how Kiblat served as a vehicle for delegitimizing the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) and communism at large. The magazine featured narratives contributed by Islamic figures and military actors (who), constructing communism as a direct threat to religion and national integrity (says what). These messages were conveyed through a religious-political media channel (in which channel), citing sources such as the military newspaper Angkatan Bersendjata, and targeted at the broader Muslim population in Indonesia (to whom). The outcome was reinforcing public opinion in favor of anti-communist sentiment and the depoliticization of the PKI (with what effect). This study highlights the strategic function of Islamic media in ideological contests during critical moments of national upheaval. Kiblat did not merely articulate religious values but also shaped political discourse and legitimized the regime. While limited to a specific timeframe and publication, this research opens pathways for further inquiry into the intersection of religion, media, and state power, especially concerning how Islamic media respond to or align with political authority during times of transformation.
