Abstract

Early age learners have characteristics and needs that are different from learning at the higher levels. Teachers at the early age level of education are required to be able to create a pleasant learning atmosphere, for example through the use of song and play media. But in reality, not all early childhood education teachers have the ability to use and develop songs in all subject areas, especially in learning English. This is due to limited references and the ability to develop creative songs. Thus, the purpose of this community service activity is to improve the teaching competency of PIAUD teachers in Jember Regency. The Participatory Action Research (PAR) method with workshop techniques and direct mentoring is used as an approach in this activity to help teachers recognize their problems and potential. This mentoring activity involved 50 PIAUD teachers in Jember District with 3 speakers who were experts in the field of English Education and psychology learning. The results of these service activities can be seen from the increase in the ability of teachers to use and develop English songs. In addition, this activity resulted in an English song compilation book that can be used as a reference for learning in class. This shows that the purpose of this service activity has been achieved by increasing the ability of the assisted teacher in using and developing English songs. Pembelajaran di tingkat usia dini memiliki karakteristik dan kebutuhan yang berbeda dengan pembelajaran pada tingkat di atasnya. Abstract

Gender representation in educational materials is a crucial aspect of fostering inclusivity and promoting social equity in the classroom. Ensuring accurate and equitable gender representation is needed to foster inclusive learning environments. This article presents the findings of a study which analyzed the gender representation within the latest English coursebook for senior high school students which adapt Kurikulum Merdeka and published by Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. The data for this research extracted from reading passages and images in the English coursebook titled "Train of Thought”. To uncover disparities in power dynamics between genders, elements such as visual depictions, character representations, social roles, domestic duties, and semantic roles were analyzed. The investigation revealed a bias favoring men in certain roles and activities, such as athleticism, social engagement, and sports participation. Despite this, some equality was found in pictorial representation, activities, and roles. These findings underscore the importance of critically examining educational materials for gender biases and stereotypes, informing curriculum development and coursebook selection processes to promote gender equity and inclusivity in education

Abstract

This qualitative study provides insight into the methods of providing feedback employed by ten faculty members from three higher education institutions in Indonesia when evaluating student papers containing Islamic content. This research provides insight into a significant gap in understanding how to provide feedback when the professor has no formal background in Islamic educational tradition. The study uses interpretive phenomenological analysis to analyze semi-structured interviews with the participants. Once their interviews were transcribed, the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis highlighted three fundamental dimensions to teacher experiences: (1) professional challenges when engaged with Islamic content including, difficulty in recognizing Islamic content and feeling less than authoritative, (2) teacher adaptive coping strategies including collaborating with consultation networks and resource utilization including digital tools for reference and academic resources support in providing feedback. The participants demonstrated impressive adaptability for developing innovative pedagogical approaches while initially struggling with ambiguity and challenges to their professional identity. This study adds to the growing literature on culturally responsive pedagogy and religious literacy in higher education contexts, and has provided practical recommendations for professional faculty development and institutional support systems. This study has provided insight-based recommendations for improving the quality of education within religiously diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study examines grammatical errors in English-language thesis abstracts by students at an Islamic Higher Education institution in Central Java and proposes strategies for improvement. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research analyzed 50 randomly selected abstracts from seven faculties, published between 2021 and 2023, using James’ (1998) error analysis framework (grammatical, substantive, lexical, syntactic, and semantic errors) and APA 7th edition guidelines. Data collection involved quantitative error categorization and qualitative insights from surveys and interviews with students and stakeholders. Findings reveal 2,616 errors, with grammatical (24%), substantive (21%), and lexical (23%) errors being most prevalent, alongside incomplete structures in 80% of abstracts. Key causes include interlingual (L1 interference) and intralingual (English complexity) factors, compounded by inadequate guidelines and oversight. These errors undermine clarity and credibility in academic writing. The study recommends providing clear abstract writing guidelines, specialized courses, workshops, and robust evaluation systems, including grammar-checking tools and faculty-led reviews, to enhance writing quality. Implications suggest that improved training can elevate students’ scholarly communication skills and institutional academic standards. Limitations include the small sample size (50 abstracts), which may not fully represent the student population, and a sole focus on English writing. Future research should expand sampling, explore error causes qualitatively, and assess intervention effectiveness longitudinally.
