Abstract

This research was about facilitating students’ pronunciations on plosive consonant sounds through Sephonics software. It was done at 3rd semester students of ELT Department of Walisongo State Institute for Islamic Studies in the academic year of 2011/2012. The background of this research was the difficulty in learning pronunciation. This research was aimed to responding the following questions; (1) How was the implementation of using sephonics software for teaching pronunciation (plosive consonant sounds) at third semester students of ELT Department, State Islamic Institute of Walisongo, Semarang? (2) Was there any improvement of students’ pronunciation of plosive consonant sounds after being taught using sephonics software? The participant of this research was the 3rd semester students of ELT Department of Education Faculty, Walisongo State Institute for Islamic Studies, Semarang that consisted of 28 students. It was a classroom action research that had two cycles. They were pre-cycle, cycle 1, and cycle 2. The use of sephonics software was used in cycle 1 and cycle 2. The methods of data collection were test and observation in all cycles. The test form was reading aloud that asked students to pronounce some words that contained plosive consonant sounds. Then, the result of test scores was analyzed by using mean to determine whether there was an improvement in each cycle. This study showed that: (1) the first thing that the teacher needed to do to use this software as a teaching aid was that he or she must conduct the class in a language laboratory. If it was not possible, the teacher could conduct the class in a regular classroom by providing several computers or laptops. Then, the students must be grouped based on the number of the computers. The second thing was that this was CALL learning based; the teacher might explain how to use the software in order that the students could practice by themselves outside of class schedule. (2) After collecting data, the result was found that the average (mean) of pre cycle test was 69. Then, it had very significant improvement in cycle 1 and cycle 2. It became 98.7 from cycle 1 test and 99.6 from cycle 2 test. It meant that the research was successful to improve the students’ pronunciation abilities. In conclusion, Sephonics software was successful to facilitate students’ pronunciations on plosive consonant sounds.

Abstract

Speaking ability is one of the most challenging skills that English as a foreign language (EFL) learners must master. Along with the development of technology, media such as podcasts have become one of the promising alternatives to support speaking learning. This study examined the effect of using podcasts on improving EFL students' speaking ability through a quasi-experimental design. The research sample consisted of 60 students of English Education Study Program at Sultan Agung Islamic University who were divided into two groups: the experimental group (n=30) who received podcast-based learning and the control group (n=30) who underwent conventional learning. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to measure four main components of speaking ability, namely fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, and vocabulary range. The results showed that the experimental group experienced more significant improvements in all components than the control group. The t-test analysis showed significant differences (p < 0.05) in the post-test scores between the two groups, with greater improvement in the experimental group in terms of fluency (t = 3.5), accuracy (t = 2.9), pronunciation (t = 3.8), and vocabulary range (t = 3.2). These findings support Krashen's Input Hypothesis and Swain's Output Hypothesis, which suggest that podcasts provide authentic language input while encouraging active language production. This study suggests the integration of podcasts in EFL speaking learning and recommends further research in various other contexts.

Abstract

Proper pronunciation is an important aspect of learning English, yet often a challenge for second language learners. Speech recognition-based technology offers an innovative solution to improve pronunciation skills through instant feedback. This study aims to evaluate the effect of speech recognition software on improving English pronunciation skills in English Language Education students at Sultan Agung Islamic University. Using a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test, the study involved two groups: an experimental group that used speech recognition software and a control group that followed conventional teaching. The results showed that the experimental group experienced significant improvements in pronunciation skills, including phonemes (44.8%), intonation (45.7%), and word stress (33.4%), while the control group showed smaller improvements. Statistical analysis using paired t-test and independent t-test confirmed that the difference between the two groups was highly significant (p-value < 0.05). The findings indicate that speech recognition software can improve English pronunciation skills more effectively than conventional methods. This study contributes to the development of the use of technology in English language education, particularly in improving pronunciation through instant feedback. The practical implications of this study include the potential integration of this tool in the English language learning curriculum to increase students' independence in practicing pronunciation.

Abstract

The study investigates the effectiveness of A1 SpeechTRON as a medium for teaching –ed ending regular verbs to tenth graders at SMA Unggulan Nurul Islami Semarang in the academic year 2010/2011. This study aimed; (1) How the use of A1 SpeechTRON as medium to teach pronunciation of –ed ending regular verbs in the narrative texts at the tenth graders of SMA Unggulan Nurul Islami Semarang in academic year of 2011/2012?, (2) How the effectiveness of A1 SpeechTRON as medium to teach pronunciation of – ed ending regular verbs in the narrative texts at tenth graders of SMA Unggulan Nurul Islami Semarang in academic year of 2011/2012?. The research involved 24 students and was conducted in two groups; an experimental group taught using the software and a control group taught without the software. Data collection involved pre and post-test reading aloud tests, with t-tests used to analyze differences between the two groups. The study found that teachers needed to conduct lessons in language laboratory, provide multiple computers/laptops, and group students into groups to practice using the software. Additionally, the software was CALL-learning-based, allowing students to practice outside of class. The pre-test average for the experimental group was 57.50, while the control group had 58.92. The post-test average was 68.75, and the t-test score was higher than the t-table (1.905 > 1.717). Researcher suggests that A1 SpeechTRON may be an alternative media for teaching –ed ending regular verb pronunciation. The study concludes that A1 SpeechTRON is an effective tool for teaching –ed ending regular verbs in narrative texts.
