Abstract

Figurative language is one of intrinsic elements of a poem. The use of figurative language is intended to beautify expressions or sentences. The purpose of this research was to describe the types of figurative languages used by Thomas Gray in his poem ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive approach. The object of this research was Gray’s poem ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’. Documentation was the instrument in collecting the data. The documentation was taken from Gray’s poem entitled ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’. After reading the poem, the researcher selected figurative languages in all stanzas. Then, the researcher identified the types of figurative language and described the meaning. As the result, the researcher found that there were some figurative languages found in Gray’s poem, namely personification (17 data), transferred epithet (1 datum), metonymy (2 data), onomatopoeia (1 datum), inversion (7 data), interrogation (2 data), hyperbole (2 data), and euphemism (4 data). From the data, personification was the figurative language that mostly found in the poem ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’ Written by Thomas Gray.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the ability of students to understand homophone in English. The research was qualitative descriptive research. The subject of the research was the seventh-semester students of the English Department of IAIN Langsa, academic year 2018/2019, that consisted of 32 students. The researchers used documentation as an instrument for collecting the data. The documentation was the result of the test given by a lecturer. The test given by the lecturer consisted of 20 questions about homophone in English. The question was in the form of phonetic transcription. The question consisted of two parts. In the first part, the students must mention two different words from a homophony sound. In the second part, the students must fill in the blank with a correct homophone word by relating to the pronunciation at the end of sentences. After conducting the research, the researchers found that 24 students got low mark because they were only able to answer one until ten questions correctly; 2 students got medium mark because they only answered 11 questions correctly, and six students got high mark because they can answer 12 until 17 questions correctly. Therefore, it can be said that the ability of students to understand homophone in English was not good enough. The problem faced by the students was that they still did not comprehend the concept of homophone in English. As a result of the test given by a lecturer, some students only knew that a homophone consisted of only one word, so they answered only one word, and some students also answered the question with three different words.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the students difficulties in determining types of case and to investigate the reasons why the students had difficulties in determining case. This was a qualitative descriptive research. The subject of this research was the sixth semester students of English Department in IAIN Langsa that consist of 30 students. Documentation, questionnaire and interview were the instruments in collecting the data. Based on the data, the students felt difficult in determining types of case such as accusative, locative, nominative, possessive, agentive, and ablative. It can be seen from the mistakes made by students through documentation and supported by the results obtained from questionnaire and interview. Then, there were several reasons why the students had difficulties in determining case. They were: 1) Many types of case given by a lecturer made the students difficult to remember them. 2) The students were confused with the types of case because a noun phrase can have more than one type. 3) The students felt difficult to distinguish between accusative and dative case. 4) The students did not master English grammar well.

Abstract

The objective of this article was to analyse the types of movement transformation which is applied in Bahasa Indonesia. This article aims to collect ideas, theories, and reported empirical data within the context of scholarship in the library. The theory used in this article was taken from the theory of Transformational Generative Grammar (TGG) introduced by Noam Chomsky. This article was an attempt to highlight how Chomsky’s concept called movement transfssormation works in Bahasa Indonesia. The data were taken from some sentences in Bahasa Indonesia. In this article, the sentences were analysed by using IC analysis. IC analysis is a method of analysing sentences by dividing them into their constituent structures. The methods used in analysing sentences were bracketing and tree diagram. Some types of movement transformation that were applied in Bahasa Indonesia were Affix Hopping, Interrogative (Aux Movement), Wh-Movement, Passive Transformation, Dative Movement, Topicalization, Particle Movement, and Relative Movement.

Abstract

William Shakespeare is the greatest dramatist in the world. He has produced a lot of literary works especially play or drama. Some of his plays still exist until now such as Julius Caesar, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, etc. Even, one of his plays Romeo and Juliet has been translated into several languages in the world. He produces two types of plays, namely comedy which usually talks about love and tragedy which talks about sadness. In tragedy plays, Shakespeare always puts supernatural and mystical elements such as in Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Hamlet, etc. The supernatural and mysticism elements are usually marked by the appearance of apparition, witch, fairy, etc, and the elements can determine the fate of main characters. This article tries to describe how Shakespeare puts supernatural and mystical elements in one of his tragedy plays Hamlet.

Abstract

Chomsky states that language is a mirror of the mind. From that opinion, he creates a concept which is known as competence and performance. Competence is the fluent native speaker’s knowledge of his language; meanwhile, performance is what people actually say or understand by what someone else says on a given situation. Chomsky adds that there are two structures involved in constructing a sentence namely, Deep Structure and Surface Structure. A sentence always derives from Deep Structure which exists in the mind of speakers. Then, syntactic rules will be applied to the Deep Structure. After applying the rules, Surface Structure will be obtained. The syntactic rules applied in a sentence are Movement Transformation, Deletion Transformation, and Substitution Transformation. However, the main discussion in this article is Movement Transformation. This article will elaborate some types of movement transformation in constructing English sentences.

Abstract

Abstract

There are three theories that are always developed in any study of language, namely theory of language structure, theory of language acquisition, and theory of language use. Among those three theories, theory of language structure is regarded as the most important one. It is assumed that if someone knows the structure of language, he/she can develop theories about how language is acquired and used. It makes Chomsky interested in developing the theory of language structure. Chomsky introduced a theory of grammar called Transformational Generative Grammar or Transformational Syntax. Transformational Syntax is a method of sentence fomation which applies some syntactic rules (or also called transformational rules). Transformational rules consist of three types, namely movement transformation, deletion transformation, and substitution transformation. When those transformational rules are applied in a sentence, they will leave empty categories. Empty categories can be in the form of Complementizer (Comp), Trace, and PRO. This article will elaborate those empty categories; their appearance in the transformational rules; and the characteristics of each empty category.
