Abstract

Abstract This paper reports the findings of an experimental pretest-posttest control group design conducted to investigate students’ critical and creative mathematical abilities using Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach. Subjects o this study were 88 eleventh grade students of a Senior High School in Bandung. The instruments of the study were two sets of critical and creative thinking mathematical abilities tests, and a set of attitude scale. The data was analysed by using t–test. The study found that : 1) Students’ gain on critical and creative thinking mathematical abilities of PBL class were higher than those students’ abilities of conventional class; 2) Students performed spositive attitude toward PBL approach. Key words: critical mathematical thinking ability, on mathematic, creative mathematical thinking ability, Problem Based Learning Abstrak Makalah ini melaporkan temuan suatu eksperimen berdisain pretes-postes dengan kelompok kontrol yang bertujuan menganalisis kemampuan beripikir kritis dan kreatif matematik dengan mengimplementasikan pembelajaran berbasis masalah. Subyek sampel penelitian ini adalah 88 siswa kelas sebelas pada satu SMA di Bandung. Instrumen penelitian meliputi: satu set tes kemampuan berpikir kritis matematik, satu set tes kemampuan berpikir kreatif matematik, dan satu set skala sikap siswa terhadap pembelajaran berbasis masalah. Studi menemukan bahwa: 1) Gain siswa dalam kemampuan berpikir kritis matematik dan dalam kemampuan berpikir kreatif matematik pada kelas PBL lebih tinggi dari gain siswa dalam kedua kemampuan tersebut pada kelas konvensional; 2) Siswa menunjukkan sikap positif terhadap pendekatan PBL.
