Abstract

Using mostly secondary data on vehicular accidents obtained from the Nigeria Police Force and Federal Road SafetyCommission, the study examined a thirty-two year review of deaths from road traffic accidents (1970-2010) in Lagos State. The reporteddeaths from road traffic accidents in the 20 Local Government Areas of Lagos State were compared using the Analysis of Variance(ANOVA). The result showed that for the two factors, Local Government Areas and years, the F-calculated of 18.32 and 7.43respectively were higher than the F-tabular of 1.64 and 1.32 respectively at 0.05 level of significance. It then implies that the means foreach of the factors, reported deaths from road traffic accidents across the 20 Local Government Areas of Lagos State and acrossdifferent years were significantly different. The result of the multiple regression analysis was 0.32. This implies that the proportion ofvariation in the dependent variable (i.e. deaths from road traffic accidents) explained by the independent variables (i.e. length of roads, presence of road safety and population) was 32%. Based on the findings, recommendations were proffered on how to reduce thephenomenon of deaths from traffic accidents in Lagos State.

Abstract

This study examined monthly analysis of road traffic accidents in selected Local Government Areas of Lagos State,Nigeria and to suggest preventive and corrective safety measures towards reducing road traffic accidents in the study area.Using accident records from the Nigerian Police Force and Federal Road Safety Commission for the thirty two (32) years periodfrom 1970 – 2001, this study seeks to reveal the traffic situation and accident pattern on monthly basis in 9 Local GovernmentAreas of Lagos State, Nigeria. Further observation revealed that the most accident prone Local Government Areas (LGAs) areLagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Ajeromi/Ifelodun, Ikeja, Oshodi/Isolo, Apapa, Eti-Osa, Kosote and Ojo. Thus, these are the LGAsthat deserve urgent traffic accident mitigation attention e.g. intensified policing by the road safety corps. Again, for variousreasons, it was also observed that most of the accidents in Nigeria occur in the months of June, July, September, October,November and December. June, July and September are the peak rainy months and more road accidents occur in rainy monthsbecause wet road conditions affect many drivers’ ability to see and be seen. Based on the findings, recommendations wereproffered on how to reduce the phenomenon of road traffic accidents in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Abstract

This study examined time series and trend analysis of fatalities from road traffic accident in Lagos State, Nigeria. The datagenerated were mostly secondary data; accident records where obtained from the Nigeria Police Force and Federal RoadSafety Commission. The data were obtained for the period of thirty two (32) years. From the time series and trend analysis, itwas observed that fatalities from road traffic accidents for each of the Local Governments under study between 1970 and2001, showed that fatalities is on the decrease with the exception of Lagos Island Local Government Area over the period ofstudy. The 16 harmonics for all the Local Government Areas considered contributed above 90% of the total variance in thetime series. This means that more than 90% of road traffic accident in Lagos State could be attributed to recklessness on thepart of drivers, ignorance of highway codes, driving under the influence of alcohol, over speeding etc. based on the findings, recommendations were proffered on how to reduce the phenomenon of fatalities from traffic accidents in Lagos State.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the factors of injuries from road traffic accidents in Lagos State, Nigeria and to suggestpreventive and corrective safety measures towards reducing the traffic accidents in the study area. The reported number ofinjuries from road traffic accidents in the 20 Local Government Areas of Lagos State from 1970-2001 were compared using theAnalysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result showed that for the two factors, Local Government Areas and years, the f-calculatedof 21.34 and 9.77 respectively were higher than the f-tabular of 1.57 and 1.46 respectively at 0.05 level of significance. It thenimplies that the means for each of the factors, reported number of injuries across the 20 Local Government Areas in LagosState and across different years, 1970-2001, were significantly different. The result of the multiple regression analysis was0.61. This implies that the proportion of variation in the dependent variables (i.e. length of roads, presence of road safety corpsand population) was 61%. The F-ratio of 14.34 was higher than table value of 2.92 at 0.05 level of confidence. This shows thatat least one of the independent variable had significant influence on the dependent variable. Based on the findings, recommendations were proffered.
