Abstract

Abstract. Wittgenstein’s new understanding of meaning as use has far reaching implications in religion and religious belief. The meaningfulness of language does not depend on the referent but on the actual use of it in the human context. The variety of language uses makes religious language legitimate, and the social character of language makes clear the role of training in religious belief. The characteristic features of religious belief can be summarized as follows: It is an unshakable commitment devoid of evidences and arguments, and it is reasonable only within its framework and grounded on the religious form of life. The rituals that are part of religious beliefs are symbolic and expressive. The existential concerns of human beings reveal a common spiritual nature enabling us to understand other religions and cultures as mirrored in our own humanity.

Abstract

This study investigates the complex interplay between art and religion within African cultures. By examining various art forms, including sculptures, masks, paintings, and textiles, this study explores how these artistic expressions have been used to convey religious beliefs and spiritual experiences. Through a multidisciplinary lens encompassing art history, anthropology, and religious studies, the research analyzes the symbolic language embedded in these artworks, to reveal the narratives and spiritual messages they communicate. It also explores the roles of artists, artisans, and religious practitioners as mediators between cultures who create and employ art within religious rituals. The study examines the transmission of artistic techniques and sacred knowledge across generations, revealing the artistic processes and the spiritual intentions behind religious artworks. Furthermore, it investigates how art functions as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, facilitating communication with deities, ancestors, and spirits. By examining the historical, social, and cultural forces that have shaped the evolution of art and religion in Africa, including the impacts of colonialism and globalization, this research explores how African artists and religious practitioners have been adapted and transformed traditional art forms while preserving their core spiritual essence. Through in-depth case studies from diverse African regions and cultural groups, this research enhances our understanding of the complex relationship between art and religion, highlighting their significance in shaping African spiritual worldviews and cultural heritage.

Abstract

The concept of liberation is one of the most fundamental concepts, a central notion of many different religious and philosophical traditions in the world. People always have desires for safety, happiness, perfection and a particularly earnest desire for liberation from the bondage, suffering of body and mind. Every successive religion has been more or less influenced by the previous religions in theories as well as in practices, yet there exist some differences among them. Most of the prophetic religions believe that the path leading to liberation is the service of God or submission to His orders. On the other hand, some religions subscribe to rites and pillars. However, humans are living in the modern world, which is an amalgam of multiple cultures and religions. The potential threats of violence, wars and social evils, especially religious conflicts are always present. The comprehensive knowledge of several cultures and religions may bridge the gaps among different faith groups. Every religion or tradition must be understood as one kind of flower among several kinds of flowers in a big garden. As such, every religion has its particular values that deserved to be respected and protected. And the common purpose of all religions is to serve human needs. Thus, the essence of this work is to reveal the concept of Liberation within some philosophical school of thought. This research employs the method of Historical, Analytical and Comparative method to arrive at its conclusions.

Abstract

Life itself is a mystery, the how and when of life’s origin constitute a serious challenge to both religion and science. To the reasoning mind, the origination of life is an intellectual problem that needs intellectual resolution especially in the domains of science and religion.  To this extent, some scientific assumptions and postulations concerning the origin of life and the universe are found in a number of theories such as evolution, biogenesis, and abiogenesis among others. Obviously, all these theories pose serious challenges to most religious beliefs including the notion of creationism. In this paper, the historical and critical analytic methods were used to document and evaluate the various religious responses on the subject. The paper posits that religious adherents should acquit themselves with authentic religious beliefs and integrate them with authentic scientific knowledge.
