Abstract

This article examines the Torajan understanding of death within the context of the teachings of Alukta or Aluk Todolo by combining John Calvin’s understanding as an orthodox reference. Toraja is rich in customs and culture, one of the most popular cultures, even for international tourists, is Rambu solo’. Rambu solo’ is a death ceremony rich in meaning. Based on this, one of the rituals in Rambu solo’ that is interesting and needs further investigation is the Ma’balik Tomate ritual. Ma’balik Tomate is a ritual in which the belief that the dead are not considered “dead” but still in a state of illness (To Makula’) is embedded. Based on this description, the research method used is a qualitative method, where books and journals that have a close relationship with the problem of this paper serve as data sources that are synthesized through an analytical and description approach. The results show that the Torajan people are limited in clearly describing the rituals carried out from generation to concept of death offered by John Calvin’s view is very relevant to the life of the cultured Torajan society. So the goal is not to eliminate the Torajan cultural heritage but to reconstruct an understanding that is in accordance with the Christian faith as written in the Bible.
