Abstract

This research explores the analysis of the type of translation procedures and the degree of meaning equivalence used in translating cultural words in the novel Semua Anak Bangsa by Pramoedya Ananta Toer into Child of All Nations by Max Lane. The objectives of this research are first, to find the types of translation procedures are used by a translator to translate cultural words in the novel Child of All Nations and second, to identify how cultural word translation to achieve the degree of meaning equivalence. The theory used is the translation procedures by Newmark and meaning equivalence by Bell. The methodology used is qualitative research in which the researcher presents the issues descriptively. As for data, they were collected from the cultural words in the dialogue and narration in the novel. After going through the analysis, the researcher concludes eleven translation procedures are used by the translator in this translation. There are transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, through-translation, shifts or transpositions, synonymy, compensation, couplets, and notes-additions-glosses. The commonly procedure is cultural equivalent. The degrees of meaning equivalence are fully equivalent, partly equivalent, and different meaning. The commonly degree of meaning equivalence is fully equivalent.

Abstract

This research analyzed code-switching and code-mixing to express social identity in the novel How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez. The studies aim to find the types of code-switching and code-mixing and how it is used to express the social identity in the novel. The theory that used in this research is the code-switching and code-mixing theory by Suzanne Romaine and the social identity theory by John J. Gumperz to find the data used to express social identity in the novel. The source of data was collected from the character’s quotations and narrations of the story in the novel. The result of this research, based on the theory used, the researcher found that the intra-sentential type of CS and CM are frequently used for 23% to express the social identity gender in the novel, followed by the other types of CS and CM in another expression of social identity. The social identity gender shown in the novel for CS and CM are most use by the women character for expressing their social identity, as the story is have more women characters than the opposite gender.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Defense Mechanism in reducing the anxiety in the novel Violet Evergarden Volume 2 by Kana Akatsuki. There are two purposes for this research. The first is to identify the type of anxiety in the novel. Second, Defense Mechanism work overcome the anxiety in the novel. The theory used in this research is Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis, particularly Mechanism Defense and Anxiety. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The researcher found that the factors causing the anxiety were classified into 3 types, namely moral anxiety, realistic anxiety, and neurotic anxiety. To overcome the anxiety, the characters use Ego Defense Mechanism as a form of self-defense. The types of defense mechanisms that the researchers found were suitable for overcoming the anxiety in the novel were Repudiate of Fact, Eradicate the mistakes of the past, Transfer negative emotion into beneficial activity, Dispersion of Negative emotions, and Contradictory behavior. The researcher found that the anxiety felt by the characters came from themselves and others, by using the Defense Mechanism the characters could relieve the anxiety they felt.
