Abstract

English as a foreign language instruction and learning in Indonesia. Speaking is one of the core abilities to be acquired in the process of teaching and learning English. Speaking serves as a crucial component of communication. Gaining proficiency in speaking English is essential for all students to be able to converse in the language. Speaking is a skill that both first and second language learners should focus on. The most crucial part of learning a second or foreign language is developing speaking abilities, and proficiency is determined by one's capacity to carry on a conversation in the target language (Nunan, 1995). The second problem is that learners complain that they cannot remember anything to say and they do not have any motivation to express themselves. This is supported by Rivers (1968) who thinks that learners often have nothing to say probably because their Lecturers had selected a topic that is not appropriate for them or they do have enough information about it. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. The data obtained from the test was analysed by Likert scale procedure indicated whether one strongly agree (SA), Agree (A), Undecided (U), Disagree (D), Strongly Disagree (SD) with each statement. The score was determine by summing the point of value of each statement. The technique of analyzed data in the research was used descriptive percentage. The technique was used asses variable of the research. The researcher classify their collect data from observation class and questionnaire, data collection from questionnaires is Likert Scale was used to assess and calculated data which obtain from questionnaires. Based on the findings and discussion, it could be concluded that there are some problems in speaking English by the fifth semester at Ship electrical engineering of Ivet University. Abstract

The cadets' ability to complete the given language activity and understand the speaking competency constitutes success in speaking English. As a result, the video conference implementation for the Speaking for Formal Interactions course at Ivet University's third-semester cadets in Ship Electrical Engineering has gone off without a hitch. Utilizing different techniques, plans of action, and extra supporting systems like Quizizz, WhatsApp Groups, Zoom Meetings, and others helps with implementation. Speaking professors and cadets also mostly benefit from video conferences in terms of efficacy, ease of connection, technology, and cost rather than experiencing any drawbacks In order to collect the data, a number of approaches, including observation, interviewing, and a questionnaire, were employed to collect the data. The human instrument, observation sheet, questionnaire, and interview guide were study tools at the same time. A technique from Miles and Hubberman (1991) was used to analyze the data that had been gathered. Additionally, the current study used methodological triangulation, which is the use of multiple data-collection techniques, including observation, interview, and questionnaire. In addition to using video conferencing for speaking, the attitudes of the lecturers and the cadets regarding using video conferencing for Speaking for Formal Interactions were also examined. The 15 items in the questionnaire were divided into four categories based on factors including video conferencing efficacy, accessibility, cost, and technology.

Abstract

The structures of spoken language are quite different from the written language, which they have time to plan, edit and correct what they produce. Our personality, ourselves image, our knowledge of the world and our ability to express our thoughts are reflected in our speaking performance. In Ivet University, where the research was taken place, I found problems of learning English speaking skill that come from students, teacher, strategy, and facility of learning. Youtube can be a learning resource and learning media that can meet the demands of the digital generation. Youtube can increase interest and support the learning styles of the digital generation. Youtube also offers learning experiences with new technologies that will be useful when they graduate. This research uses descriptive qualitative method as the method of the research. The analysis conducted to the first semester students of ship Machinery Department of Ivet University, The aim of this research was to know the effectiveness of using YouTube video in developing students' speaking skills. The assessment was in form of speeches in front of the classroom. There are 25 cadets for the 1st semester of 2020, all of whom are internet generations. The research lasted for 1 month which consisted of 2 meetings per week. In the Nas Daily Youtube Channel it is packaged attractively and in each video there are English subtitles that can be used by cadets to learn about the formation of English sentence structures, learn about pronunciation, intonation, grammar, etc. The results showed that videos on Youtube can be used as a learning medium, and the cadets enjoy learning with it.
