Abstract

This is a research about effectiveness of businesswomen leadership in four different ethnic groups in Indonesia. The effectiveness is measured in a condition where the leadership is supported by several factors, such as intrapersonal skills, interpersonal skills and culture. The subjects of this research are 216 female leaders of business units that consist of at least 10 employees, from Bali in Bali, Java in central Java, Minangkabau in West Sumatra and Batak tribes (Karo, Angkola, Mandailing) in North Sumatra. The result of this research shows that the examination of hypotheses using the theoretical model consisting of intrapersonal factors (leadership intelligence, sex roles, educational background), interpersonal factors (assertiveness, leadership style and leadership behaviour), and culture (family, business environment, and cultural environment) can be used to explain leadership effectiveness, although the influence of the three factors above are not significant. Almost all business women have a transformational leadership style. A more meaningful parameter to measure female leadership effectiveness, a larger number of subjects in each ethnic group, and variations of business fields are suggested.

Abstract

Plagiarism, intolerance, and sexual harassment highlight the assessment of university students’ ethical awareness as essential measure. The study aims to develop and validate an ethical awareness scale by constructing a measuring instrument based on Yeung and Keup’s (2009) preliminary research, using open ended questionnaire and focus group discussions, expert judgement, and legibility test. 251 students were recruited through convenience sampling. The results of psychometric testing using exploratory factor analysis indicate that the 12-item scale is valid in terms of construct validity. The Kaiser Meyer Olkin test showed a score of 0.865, with a Bartlett’ s Sphericity test value of 1.240, df = 66 and p = 0.000, and the factor loading ranged from 0.409 to 0.814. Total variance explained by this scale is 46.827%, in which academic and social factors contribute to 39.001% of variance, while information technology contributes to 7.826% of variance. Reliability testing using Cronbach's Alpha yielded a coefficient value of α = 0.874. The implications of this study include the necessities for further development of the instrument to specifically measure information technology factor, to conduct confirmatory factor analysis with other students, and to modify the scale based on participants’ different characteristics. This scale can also be used to determine the effectiveness of ethics outreach programs.

Abstract

In nursing services for early childhood hospitalized patients, nurses' empathetic attitudes cannot be implemented optimally. Empathy is a knowledge and skill that can be improved through education and training programs. Although there are many empathy training programs in nursing, there is no training programs specifically designed to increase nurses' empathy towards early childhood patients. This thesis is a research on an intervention program in the form of the "I Love and Understand You" training program which aims to increase nurses' empathy towards young children who are being treated in hospital. This research is a quantitative research with a one group difference test design before and after intervention or one group pretest post-test design. There were 18 participants in this study. Based on the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, the research results showed a significant increase in nurses' empathy towards early childhood before and after the intervention program was implemented (p-value < 0.001, p < 0.05). Based on the Friedman test, the research results also showed that nurses' empathy for early childhood remained significantly different two weeks after the intervention program was implemented (p-value 0.001, p < 0.05). This proves that the "I Love and Understand You" training program increases nurses' empathy for young children who are being treated in hospital.
