Abstract

Ecocriticism or Green Study emerged in the field of literature in the late 20th century where the relationship between literary text and physical environment is explored. The recent human actions and environmental degradation have encouraged human beings to explore the ecological visions of the authors from different genres. The industrial revolution in the Victorian era brought enormous changes in society, and literary texts were produced concerning ecological degradation or celebrating the relationship between human beings and nature. Dante Gabriel Rossetti's vision toward establishing the connection between humans and the physical environment is an important aspect of the ecocritical study. Ecocriticism has been widely viewed as a field of study where environmental awareness can be raised through the theoretical study of literary texts. Therefore, this paper aims at exploring Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s selected poems from an ecocritical point of view. Rossetti's poems represent a significant amount of human-nature interaction and nature’s enormous healing power to the eco-system. This study also aims at growing the ecological consciousness of the readers in a world where it is going through a phase of life-threatening climate change.

Abstract

This article aims at exploring Bangladeshi EFL students’ use of self-conversation recordings and their effectiveness in improving oral fluency. It also explores using Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) to enhance students' speaking performance. The study followed a quasi-experimental research design to check the improvement in the student's oral fluency and accuracy. The sample has been selected purposively. The study sample was 50 EFL students studying in the first semester at the Department of English at the Green University of Bangladesh. Students' speaking data were collected using a pre-test at the beginning of the semester and a post-test at the end of the semester. The data were then analyzed using the statistical software SPSS. The result of the study shows that the self-conversation recording by the students can improve their fluency with grammatical accuracy, and the achievement in the fluency of the students from the experimental group was considerably higher than the control group. The average N-gain score of the experimental group students was better than the control group students (.0424>0.205). However, the mean score achieved in the pre-test in the experimental class and control class was (52.14 <59.16), the mean score achieved in the post-test by the experimental group was higher (72.33 >67.40). The paired sample t-test indicates a significant improvement with a t-value of -14.237 and p. value = .000<0.005. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the instructors of the EFL classroom can use self-conversation recordings to improve their students’ fluency.

Abstract

This paper explores the English Literature classes that are taught online in Bangladeshi universities and the attitude of the students towards these classes. The new-normal after the Covid-19 outbreak forced the students to attend classes online and their experience about the English Literature classes are investigated in this research. The total number of participants for this study was ninety-seven. The research was conducted on the students of the Department of English in four private universities in Bangladesh. A survey questionnaire was prepared consisting of twenty questions to collect the data online. The data was analysed with quantitative method of research. Digital statistical software Microsoft Excel used for the data analysis. The research finding shows that the students find poetry and short story classes effective and engaging in online classes but showed unfavorable attitude towards novel and drama classes. The results also show that the students want more opportunity to share their opinion in the class and preferred visual aids in online classes. This study implies that while the instructors and the students are going through an unprecedented challenge of learning English Literature in online classrooms, the obstacles can be mitigated through increasing interactive classroom discussion and precise use of multimedia tools while teaching different genres of English Literature.
