Abstract

The election of Donald Trump with his America First slogan has sent a signal that the new President is less interested in maintaining the position held by the United States as the leader on the international stage. This phenomenon raises questions about the United States’ commitment to its military presence outside its territory. By presenting the case of US military bases in Japan, this paper attempts to project the fate of these bases under the Trump presidency. At first glance, the President's inward-looking policy may seemingly trigger the future withdrawal of US troops from Japan. However, this article shall present an argument to the contrary: US military bases in Japan will survive the Trump presidency. To prove this argument; first, this article analyzes the reasoning behind the decision of a sending country to withdraw its military forces. Secondly, this article discusses what factors may underlie the decision of a host country to end military cooperation with the sending country. Finally, this paper analyzes the existence of mutual strategic factors. Although seven of these eight factors are supporting the continued presence of US military bases, one factor, namely President Trump's isolationist policy, shows that it may lead to the contrary. Nevertheless, this isolationist policy factor alone is not enough to end the existence of US military bases in Japan.

Abstract

The existing literature on political scandals predominantly focuses on their detrimental effects on society at large. This paper aims to offer an alternative perspective, arguing that political scandals can lead to positive change. It does so by examining the case of Japan’s ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its ties to the controversial religious organization, the Unification Church (UC). These ties were brought into public attention, following the assassination of the former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe. Drawing on the framework of scandal mediation process (Prusa, 2010), this paper defines scandal as a form of communication between the elite and the masses, that facilitated by the media. By consulting data from newspapers and government reports, this paper investigates the progression of the scandal. It highlights how the communication unfolded during the progression of the scandal through public pressure, intense media coverage, public apologies by members of the political elites, and attempts to mitigate the damage. Moreover, this paper argues that the swift response from the government, notably the passing of anti-malicious donation law, shows that a political scandal can positively impact the functioning of social order. Focusing on how and under what circumstance a political scandal may have a positive impact introduces a richer nuance to the discussion of Japanese political scandals as demonstrated by these findings.

Abstract

Happened in 2011, Japanese people will never forget the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster as one of the saddest memories. More than ten years passed, and now Fukushima is starting to “move.” As it aims to understand the pattern of how the media frames this news topic, this research explores how Japanese media frames the topic of how Fukushima is “moving” after ten years have passed since the disaster. To achieve its aim, this research employs thematic analysis of the news data that were gathered from YouTube. Through the analysis, how the Japanese media framed the news was thick with elements of collectivism, as it is seen that the media frames the city-society as a unity and has a strong correlation even to the socio-cultural level. Elaborated with Nakane’s (1989) frame and attribute, it can be seen that the media framed the city as a spatial communal frame that binds society as a single commune entity. This finding shows the media frames the city and society as one “group.” In conclusion, the framing carried out by the Japanese media was nuanced with the concept of shuudanshugi or “group-oriented.”

Abstract

This paper presents a narrative review of Indonesian academic discourse on Japanese popular culture and examines how this field has developed over the past twenty years. Using selected keyword searches in academic databases and journals, 97 relevant articles published between 2003 and 2023 have been identified. These articles are thematically coded and analyzed to map prevailing research trajectories. The review reveals four dominant themes: (1) cinema and anime, (2) audience and reception, (3) soft power and cultural diplomacy, and (4) representation and identity. This mapping highlights both well-established areas of study and underexplored topics that require further attention. By identifying gaps in the existing literature and suggesting new directions for inquiry, the paper contributes to a deeper understanding of how Japanese popular culture has been studied in Indonesia. It also provides a foundation for future scholarship and a resource for those seeking to expand this field.
