Abstract

This research article delves into the exploration of English pre-service teachers' proficiency in utilizing an artificial intelligence-based application, specifically Quillbot, to enhance reading comprehension within the context of English for Islamic studies. Qualitative data are derived from questionnaire, learning tasks and focus group discussions, which delve into students' perspectives on artificial intelligence for language learning and language teaching. The results indicate that English pre-service teachers adeptly harnessed Quillbot to paraphrase text from articles, effectively enhancing reading comprehension. Beyond paraphrasing, students demonstrated their analytical skills by subjecting Quillbot's output to grammar analysis. Moreover, the study showcased participants' comprehension abilities as they crafted questions and answers rooted in the article's content. Ultimately, the findings underscore the participants' favorable outlook on AI tools for facilitating language learning and teaching, accentuating the positive stance of English pre-service teachers toward integrating AI technologies into language education.

Abstract

This article aimed to investigate the use of  mobile application among physics teachers in terms of its use as a tool for physics experiment and  the obstacles faced by teachers. The  data were collected using a questionnaire consisted of 15 questions. The participants were physics teachers in SMP/MTs and SMA/MA (junior high schools and high schools) in West Java, Indonesia. The questionnaire was delivered through social media Whatsapp in a form of Google Form. The results showed that mobile application had not been widely used by the teachers as a tool for physics experiment. This condition occured because of  their limited knowledge in using mobile application as a tool for physics experiment. It is expected that the use of mobile application training will be a solution in updating ICT skills of physics teachers.

Abstract

This study examines the use of metadiscourse in English, Indonesian, and Arabic research article abstracts from the Studia Islamika journal, published between 2014 and 2023. Focusing on enhancing cross-cultural academic communication, the research analyzes how authors affiliated with Islamic higher education institutions employ metadiscourse to engage readers and position their work within the scholarly field. Using Hyland's (2005) metadiscourse framework, the study identifies distinct patterns in the distribution and realization of interactive and interactional metadiscourse elements across the three languages. Transitions are the most frequently employed interactive feature, with a stronger reliance on frame markers in Indonesian and Arabic abstracts. However, the absence of self-mentions and engagement markers across all three languages suggests a shared preference for a formal academic tone. These findings provide valuable insights into metadiscourse practices in Islamic studies abstracts, offering guidance for scholars in preparing manuscripts for publication. Additionally, this research underscores the importance of focusing on metadiscourse in academic writing within language education departments at Islamic higher education institutions, enhancing scholars’ writing skills and promoting awareness of cultural and linguistic nuances when addressing a global audience.

Abstract

This research endeavors to assess the allocation of mathematics education courses concerning mathematics computer technology, metacognition, and meta-skills in mathematics learning. It also aims to gauge the outcomes of mathematical metacognition abilities through the utilization of mathematical computer applications. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study simultaneously gathered and analyzed qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative data were derived from the outcomes of metacognition abilities, while qualitative information was obtained from curriculum documents and metacognition abilities. The metacognition thinking ability test comprised 10 short descriptions related to differential and integral calculus material. The participants were 45 seventh-semester students majoring in mathematics education during the 2021/2022 academic year at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, all of whom undertook mathematics computer application courses. The findings indicate that the mathematics education study program has implemented a curriculum fostering the attainment of qualifications for graduates adept at applying mathematical computer technology, evidenced by the distribution of computer technology-based courses. Metacognition and meta-skills are deemed essential in preparing prospective teachers to engage in higher-level thinking and effectively apply new knowledge, particularly through the application of mathematical computer programs. Notably, students demonstrated good metacognition abilities based on the assessment results.

Abstract

Research article abstracts play a critical role in academic communication, particularly in Islamic education, as they serve as a gateway for readers to access and evaluate scholarly contributions. This study investigates the rhetorical moves and linguistic features of trilingual paired abstracts (English, Indonesian, and Arabic) in Islamic studies research articles. Using a corpus-based approach and contrastive linguistic analysis, the study examines how authors structure their abstracts and employ linguistic strategies across these three languages. The findings reveal that all three languages follow Hyland’s five-move framework, with Moves 2 (Purpose), 3 (Method), and 5 (Conclusion) being the most common. In contrast, Move 4 (Product) emerged as obligatory across the corpus. At the step level, Step 8 (context and procedures) dominated in the Method move, and Steps 6 and 7 were prevalent for Move 3, while Steps 11 and 12 were rarely used in Move 5. Linguistically, there is a consistent preference for the present tense and active voice, with English abstracts heavily favoring the present tense and Indonesian abstracts relying on non-conjugated verbs. These results have practical implications for language departments in Islamic higher education institutions, guiding the development of academic writing curricula. They also offer insights for researchers in Islamic studies to craft effective abstracts and manuscripts aligned with international academic conventions.
