Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of watching TED Talks as an authentic medium for developing English speaking skills. The research employed a qualitative approach involving first-semester students of the English Education Department at STAIN Mandailing Natal during the odd semester of the 2025 academic year. Twenty students were selected through purposive sampling based on preliminary observations indicating difficulties in speaking English. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations to gain in-depth insights into students’ experiences and perceptions. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students generally perceive TED Talks positively as an effective learning medium that enhances motivation, confidence, and awareness of speaking components. Exposure to TED Talks helps students develop greater awareness of pronunciation, grammar usage, fluency, and vocabulary in authentic communicative contexts. Although some students initially feel intimidated by the speakers’ proficiency, repeated exposure gradually reduces anxiety and encourages reflective and independent learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe parenting strategies in managing social media use among early childhood children in Kelurahan Pidoli Dolok. The widespread use of social media has become a significant challenge for parents, especially during early childhood a developmental stage that is highly vulnerable to digital influences. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews with 20 parents who have young children. The findings reveal that parents apply three main parenting styles: democratic, authoritarian, and permissive. The democratic parenting style is the most commonly applied and has a positive impact on various aspects of child development, including cognitive, social-emotional, language, and moral-spiritual growth. In contrast, authoritarian parenting tends to restrict children's expression and limits their social media use without sufficient explanation, while permissive parenting allows excessive freedom without supervision, leading to negative consequences such as gadget addiction, emotional disturbances, and weakened moral understanding. These findings highlight the importance of active parental involvement in supervising and guiding children's media use, so that social media can be utilized positively to support holistic child development.

Abstract

This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design aimed at obtaining an in-depth understanding of the utilization of illustrated visual media in early childhood literacy activities. The research subjects were children enrolled in one of the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) institutions. This approach was selected to comprehensively describe the naturally occurring learning process and to capture children's responses during the implementation of literacy activities. Data were collected through participatory observation and documentation techniques. Observation was conducted to directly examine children’s engagement, learning interactions, and the implementation of illustrated visual media in the literacy process. Documentation served as supporting data, including activity records, children’s work, and relevant instructional archives. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, systematic data display, and conclusion drawing to generate meaningful findings. The findings revealed that the use of illustrated visual media in literacy activities made a positive contribution to enhancing children’s engagement and active participation during the learning process. The media effectively captured children’s attention, stimulated their interest in learning, and facilitated their understanding of the Islamic values conveyed. Therefore, the use of illustrated visual media can be considered an effective instructional strategy to support literacy development as well as the internalization of values in early childhood education.
