Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences in working hours of male and female workers on the wage gap during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) area in 2020 using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and the Blinder-Oaxaca Decomposition. Utilizing the National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS) 2020, the results showed that working hours positively and significantly affected wages with a coefficient of 4.72% for male workers and 7.05% for female workers. The Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition proved that working hours contribute to reducing the wage gap because there is wage convergence due to reduced working hours during the implementation of the Large-Scale Social Restrictions policy in Jabodetabek.

Abstract

Changes in the demographic structure contribute to the aging of the population. The constraints imposed by the limited formal support from the government lead to a dependency of the elderly population on intergenerational support and income derived from the labor market. This research analyze the role between financial transfers provided by adult children to elderly parents who have entered retirement to the workforce participation of the elderly in Indonesia. Utilizing secondary data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey 5 (IFLS 5), the research focuses on individuals aged 50 years or older who have entered retirement. Findings through logit regression suggest that financial transfers may diminish elderly workforce participation. Additional variables that also influencing elderly workforce participation include pension funds, age, gender, and marital status. Conversely, variables such as marital status and living with children variables do not exhibit a significant impact on elderly workforce participation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the magnitude of the wage gap between disabled and non-disabled workers in Jabodetabek in 2022 using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition methods. The data used in this study are derived from the National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS). The results of the study show that, in general, workers with disability status are negatively and significantly associated with wages, indicating that the wages received by disabled workers are 6.32% lower than those of non-disabled workers. The OLS regression results are further complemented by the Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition method to analyze the magnitude of the average wage gap between disabled and non-disabled workers. The results reveal a wage gap of 34.2%, as indicated by the difference coefficient (D). Of this gap, 27.9% can be explained by differences in the socioeconomic characteristics of workers, while the remaining 6.32% is attributable to unexplained or unobserved factors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of commuting time in explaining the gender wage gap in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area. This study presents an analysis of the gender wage gap as well as its explained and unexplained components using the Blinder-Oaxaca method with data provided by 2019 Jakarta Metropolitan Area Commuter Survey. The addition of commuting time as one of the explanatory factors is a novel aspect of the analysis. Two different methods known as ordinary least squares and the Heckman selection model are used to estimate wage equality for men and women. Depending on the methodology, estimates of the gap range from 3% to 11%. The decomposition of the gap reveals that between 2% and 3% of the gap is explained by the worker characteristic known as endowment factor while 7% to 12% of the gap is unexplained. This shows that the contribution of the unexplained factor to the income gap between genders is greater than the endowment factor. Commute time is found to account for 0,4% of the logarithmic wage gap explained by the worker characteristics. Results clearly identified that women have shorter average commute times compared to men, which may be due to women's willingness to be paid less as their compensating for shorter commute times.
