Methods: Retrospective research design was used where all the 621 cases seen in the facility over the study period were retrieved and reviewed. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Research and Ethics Committee of RSTH. Data was analysed using frequency tables, charts and multiple regression analysis. Results: The result revealed the mean age of the cases as 39±1 and 62% were males. While the CKD burden between 2016 (51) and 2016 (47) were relatively lower than the later years, a marked increase in the number of CKD cases was witnessed in the facility in 2017 (147) and the curve plateaued at such high prevalence through 2018 (155) and 2019 (151) until 2020 where a drastic drop (70) was witnessed were only 11.2% of the cases were seen. Conclusion: The findings further revealed having chronic glomerulonephritis, comorbidities of hypertension and chronic glomerulonephritis and, hypertension and diabetes, being 60 years & above and being male (p<0.05) as the predictors of having CKD among the patients seen at the facility. It was concluded that, there is a growing trend in the burden of CKD in the state and there is need for further investigations to determine the factors behind it in order to proffer solution to the problem.

Abstract

Background: Chronic Renal Failure is a progressive irreversible deterioration in renal function in which the body’s power to maintain metabolic, fluid, and electrolyte balance fails, resulting in uremia which contributes to the patient's dependence upon hemodialysis for the maintenance of the internal milieu and to avoid uremia. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are characterized by low levels of physical activity and a continuous decline in physical function. The main aim of the study was to assess the effect of structured nursing intervention on treatment adherence among patients with end-stage renal disease in Kano Metropolis. Methods: This study utilized a two-group pretest-post-test quasi-experimental design. Patients receiving dialysis care at Muhammadu Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital and Abubakar Imam Urology Hospital were purposively selected as experimental and control groups respectively. A total of 422 participants were estimated and selected for the study and equally shared among the two groups, i.e. 211 for the control and 211 for the experimental group. All statistical data were analyzed and described using simple frequencies, Chi-square, T-test and regressions. Results: Regarding treatment adherence, the pre-intervention mean score was 52.9 and 50.00, and the post-intervention score was 73.2 and 54.6 in the intervention and control groups, respectively. The effectiveness of the intervention was tested using unpaired t-test which was found to be significantly effective (p<0.005). Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, the structured nursing intervention was effective in improving the level of knowledge regarding the disease and treatment adherence (p<0.005) among patients with end-stage renal disease in the Kano metropolis. It is therefore recommended that the nephrology nurses, hospital administrators, and the general public join hands to make the services accessible and affordable to these patients to maintain their normal life activities through good adherence to the treatment regimen.

Information sought was on personal risk perception, frequency of lockdown protocol violations, general perception regarding COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria, Pearson’s chi square and frequencies were examined from the data with SPSS version 25.Results: 55.3% were between the ages of 26-35 years, 59.2% were males, 61.2% were singles, and 80.9% lived in urban areas. About half, (54.6%) had moderate risk perception, 41.4% had high personal COVID-19 risk perception. Though 40.1% strictly adhered to the lockdown protocols, 71.7% of the respondents had a positive perception regarding the lockdown. Pearson’ chi-square revealed significant relationship between being 26-35 years old, being male, being married, having at least a bachelor’s degree, being Hausa, being a public servant and having a moderate to high COVID-19 risk perception (p>0.05).Conclusion: There was a good level of COVID19 personal risk perception in the majority of the Nigerian populace and although majority had a positive perception regarding lockdown as a precautionary measure to curtail the spread of COVID-19, less than half of the respondents adhered strictly to the lockdown protocols.

Abstract

Hepatitis B is an inflammatory disease of the liver which is caused by Hepatitis B Virus. It is a global problem, with 66% of all the population living in areas where there are high levels of infections. Hepatitis B infection may be due to lapses in the sterilization of instruments as well as improper waste management. Knowledge regarding Hepatitis B and safety precautions is needed to minimize the health care setting’s acquired infections among health personnel and students of health Science. The objectives of the study are: (a) To assess the knowledge regarding Hepatitis B prevention among African Students of Health Sciences (b) To evaluate the effectiveness of the structured teaching program regarding knowledge on prevention of hepatitis B among the students. A Quasi-experimental design was adopted and a sample of 50 African students were selected by non-probability purposive sampling technique. Data was collected by administering structured questionnaire before and after the implementation of structured teaching program. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and represented in tables and graphs. In the present study 66% of respondents had inadequate knowledge regarding Hepatitis B prevention before the implementation of structured teaching Program. But after the implementation of structured teaching program, 14% had moderate score and remaining 86% had adequate knowledge. The findings of the study revealed that the mean Post-test knowledge score (26.06) of the students exposed to structured teaching program was higher than the mean Pretest knowledge score (15.74) which was tested to be significant at P- value of 0.001 levels, which indicates the structured teaching program was effective. The overall findings of the study showed that there was a significant improvement in the knowledge scores after the administration of structured teaching program. Hence it can be concluded that structured teaching program was effective in improving the knowledge of African students regarding hepatitis B prevention.
