One type of unique Indonesian music that can induce a relaxation effect is gamelan music. This research aims to investigate the impact of Java gamelan music on enhancing pain tolerance in college students. The study adopts an experimental approach with a pre-post-test design. We used an algometer to measure pain. Thirty college students who participated in the study randomly assigned to two groups: 15 students in the control group and 15 students in the experimental group. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test with IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 22 software. The results indicate that Java gamelan music can enhance pain tolerance in college students where there is some improvement between the posttest and pretest difference in the experiment group while there is some degradation between the posttest and pretest difference in the control group. These findings suggest the potential use of Java gamelan music for reducing individual pain.
