Abstract

Global Social Movements (GSMs) have become integral to the study of Sociology and International Politics, reflecting the interconnectedness of global communities on diverse issues. Orchestrated by NGOs and INGOs, GSMs encompass environmental, women’s, human rights, racial, fair trade, and refugee movements, among others, reflecting the breadth of global concerns. However, challenges arise from political affiliations between civil society members and state authorities, as well as pressures from donor countries and ruling elites in economically disadvantaged nations. This study, employing content analysis methodology, aims to delineate the causes of GSMs, investigate the roles of INGOs and civil society, and explore the interplay between GSMs and global governance. Through critical analysis, it provides insights and recommendations to enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of GSMs in addressing global challenges, thus contributing to the advancement of global democracy and governance structures.

Abstract

Populism is one of the most popular techniques used by Asian political parties. Political parties use this tactic through socio-political movements not only for the larger good of society but also for their own narrow goals. This article investigates two separate political parties from India and Japan. Populist policies have both beneficial and harmful effects on politics. The given promises often failed to address the grievances of the voters. A significant civil society movement propelled the Aam Admi Party (AAP) to political status. It began as a non-political entity and evolved into a political one. Following the formation of AAP, the issue of civil society as a non-political entity arose. The AAP is a regional party that holds power in two Indian states, focusing its populist policies on local issues. As a national party, the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP) is comparatively old and addresses pertinent national issues, like national security. The quality of politics and socio-economic dynamics of the two countries are different. This paper argues that populism as a tool cannot always be beneficial for the political culture of a country. The wide gap between the promises and implementation often creates discontent among the voters. This paper will attempt the delineate the different scenarios of the populist policies of the AAP of India and the LDP of Japan using the content analysis method.

Abstract

Research Problem: Women’s activism through social media in South Asia, particularly in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, is shaped by a complex interplay of religion, public policy, and socio-political contexts. While social media offers opportunities for empowerment and advocacy, its role remains contested due to societal barriers, political constraints, and religious influences. Research Purposes: This study aims to explore the dynamics of women’s online activism in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, examining how socio-economic, political, and religious factors influence their digital engagement. It seeks to identify key challenges and highlight the comparative impact of social media on women’s advocacy in these two countries. Research Methods: The study employs a qualitative approach, using content analysis of secondary data, including reports, academic studies, and media articles. Comparative analysis is applied to evaluate the socio-political and religious factors shaping women’s digital activism in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Results and Discussion: In Sri Lanka, women benefit from higher literacy rates and a relatively open societal structure, enabling them to use social media effectively for addressing issues like corruption and economic mismanagement. However, ethnic and religious divisions limit cohesive activism. In Afghanistan, women demonstrate resilience by leveraging platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp despite facing severe socio-religious constraints and the Taliban’s repressive policies. The analysis underscores the critical role of social media as both a tool for advocacy and a contested space for control and suppression. Research Implications and Contributions: The study highlights the necessity of addressing structural barriers to enhance women’s digital participation. Regional collaboration, improved digital literacy, and international advocacy are recommended to amplify women’s voices in both countries. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on the intersection of religion, public policy, and digital activism, providing insights for policymakers and activists working toward inclusive social progress.

Abstract

The study argues that India’s national security has faced significant challenges over the years, both domestic and foreign. The socio-political landscape plays a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of internal security. Separatist movements, as well as radical political and religious ideologies, have emerged as major threats to national stability. On the other hand, suspicious actions by neighboring countries have raised concerns about India’s external security. In addition to maintaining territorial integrity, India is also concerned about maritime security and potential nuclear threats from parties considered as strategic adversaries. The study also examines non-traditional security threats and how the Indian government has responded to these challenges through various security policies and strategic alliances with other countries. Given the increasingly complex and evolving challenges, an integrated approach is needed across the three main branches of India’s defense. In addition, the study will discuss the ongoing security tensions between India and Bangladesh, and the role of China and Pakistan in exacerbating bilateral security issues. The study uses content analysis as the primary approach in examining the dynamics of India’s security as a whole.

Abstract

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the delicate equilibrium between security imperatives and the protection of individual privacy is under intense scrutiny. This abstract explores the multifaceted challenges posed by the proliferation of surveillance technologies and their impact on human rights. As governments and corporations harness the power of surveillance for security purposes, concerns over privacy violations, data breaches, and potential abuses of power have come to the forefront. This abstract delves into the evolving legal and ethical frameworks governing surveillance practices, highlighting key debates and global perspectives. It also examines the implications for fundamental human rights such as freedom of expression, privacy, and assembly. By examining case studies, emerging technologies, and international efforts to strike a balance between security and privacy, this abstract seeks to shed light on the complex dynamics of this contemporary issue and proposes potential avenues for reconciling these often conflicting interests. Ultimately, it calls for a thoughtful and inclusive dialogue that can guide the development of responsible surveillance policies that respect individual rights and uphold the principles of a free and democratic society.
