Abstract

Gen Y (millennials) and Z are predicted to have a vital role in the conduct of General Elections, this cannot be separated from quantitative data-based considerations, specifically their very large proportion of the total number of Voters. Within the context of the 2024 West Java Governor and Vice Governor Elections, such figure is realized to reach 54 percent. Given such background, it is not surprising that all components of interest, in this case the electoral committees, electoral candidates, and including academics are competing in making a more detailed map of the political preferences and voting behavior of gen Y and Z. This study uses a qualitative method and critical discourse analysis approach. This study seeks to show a number of factors in relation to the political preferences of gen Y and Z in the implementation of democratic mechanisms, specifically General Elections. These political preferences of gen Y and Z are mapped out through survey data, those survey data are analyzed in depth through the theory of voting behavior. This study is expected to be a reference for electoral committees and electoral candidates in the formulation of strategic policies to improve gen Y and Z's participation and involvement in electoral politics.

Abstract

AbstractGolput is a reality that can be found in all democratic election arenas in Indonesia. This article analyzes theoretical transformations, models and a number of factors that lead to the abstention phenomenon. Apart from this, this analysis is also regarding the dynamics of fluctuations in the number of abstentions and the characteristics of abstentions in the political landscape of West Java is an important part of this article. Some changes in the election implementation model that are carried out simultaneously have consequences including a scale of complexity that can influence citizens' voting interest. By using a search of various relevant literature, it is suspected that abstention plays a large role in the government's legitimacy. The result of data analysis show that the absentions will also be occur in the 2024 elections, but the numbers potentially not much different from the numbers that appeared in the previous election.Keywords : Absention, Election, Political Contestation, West Java AbstrakGolput merupakan fakta politik yang dapat ditemui pada seluruh arena pemilihan umum demokratis di Indonesia. Artikel ini menganalisis transformasi teoritik, model dan sejumlah faktor yang mengakibatkan terjadinya fenomena golput. Selain hal tersebut, analisis terkait dinamika fluktuasi angka golput serta corak karakteristik golput dalam landscape politik jawa barat merupakan bagian yang penting dalam artikel ini. Perubahan model pelaksanaan pemilu yang dilakukan secara serentak membawa konsekuensi termasuk skala kompleksitas yang dapat mempengaruhi minat memilih dari warga negara. Dengan menggunakan penelusuran terhadap berbagai literatur yang relevan, golput ditengarai memiliki peran yang besar terkait legitimasi yang dimiliki oleh pemerintah. Hasil analisis terhadap sejumlah data menunjukan bahwa golput secara potensial masih akan terjadi dalam pemilu serentak tahun 2024, akan tetapi dengan jumlah yang diprediksi tidak akan berbeda jauh dengan angka yang muncul pada kontestasi pemilu periode yang lalu.Kata Kunci : Golput, Pemilu, Kontestasi Politik, Jawa Barat
