Abstract

Discourse Analysis examines the nature of language and the use of language in communication and also research and analyzes language use naturally, both spoken and written. The form of discourse is divided into two; namely spoken discourse and written discourse. There are several types of studies in discourse analysis which aim to analyze both spoken and written language and one of them is discourse and conversation. The scope of this research discussed about students’ understanding in analyzing spoken discourse in discourse and conversation. The research method used descriptive qualitative research. The source of data was the sixth semester students at English department IAIN Takengon. The number of sample was 18 students of English department. The techniques of data collection were observation, interview and documentation. Based on the result of research, it can be concluded that the sixth semester students of English department IAIN Takengon still have difficulties in analyzing discourse and conversation. From the result of research, it can be seen that the total sum of error in discourse and conversation about transcription convention was 13 errors, for sequence and structure in conversation was 25 errors, for preference organization was 8 errors, for feedback was 8 errors and 4 errors for repair.

Abstract

Morphology is a branch of linguistics which studied about the intricacies of word forms and their changes. Besides that morphology also investigates the possibility of word changes that arise as a result of changes in word form. In morphology, a morpheme is the smallest grammatical unit that has meaning. In the discussion of morphemes, there are several types of morphemes namely; free morpheme, bound morpheme, inflectional morpheme and derivational morpheme. The purposes of this research are; (1) to find the types of morphemes in Maher Zain’s song and; (2) to find the dominant type of morpheme in Maher Zain’s song. The research method was qualitative method with library research design, while the source of data in this research was the lyrics of Maher Zain’s song. The data analysis in this research used Miles and Hubberman’s model. The result of this research were; (1) there were four types of morphemes on Maher Zain’s song consisted of fifteen songs in ”One” album. For free morpheme was 962 words, bound morpheme was 186 words, inflectional morpheme was 995 words and derivational morpheme was 391 words; and (2) the dominant type of morpheme on Maher Zain’s song was inflectional morpheme about 995 words.

Abstract

First language acquisition is the process by which someone acquires their first language. Acquisition refers to linguistic ability in a natural, unconscious manner and focusing on linguistic forms. Children aged 0-5 years begin to use language and require assistance and stimulation from parents and their surroundings to help develop their language skills. The purpose of this research is to describe first language acquisition in children in developing linguistic abilities in morphology and syntax within the context of simultaneous bilingual first language acquisition (Bilingual FLA) of Indonesian (B1) and Gayo (B2). The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data sources in this research are 2 (two) children aged 2 to 3 years. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and documentation. The research results can be classified into a) Morphological development in 2-year-old children; b) Syntactic development in 2-year-old children; c) Morphological development in 3-year-old children; d) Syntactic development in 3-year-old children. The development of these abilities is marked by an increase in vocabulary, the ability to form simple sentences, and the mastery of several language functions in children aged 2 and 3 years.
