Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to explore Michel Foucault’s concept of power relations, understood as mechanisms embedded within social interactions, and how this concept is represented in the film Wish (2023). The film portrays a system of behavioral regulation and surveillance exercised by the main character, King Magnifico. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observations of selected dialogues and scenes that reflect the dynamics of power in the narrative. The analysis reveals two primary forms of power practices: power-knowledge and disciplinary power. Power-knowledge is manifested through control over information and narratives that shape the citizens’ perceptions of hope and reality. Meanwhile, disciplinary power is reflected in surveillance, punishment, and the formation of obedient subjects. The findings show that power in Wish is not merely repressive, but also operates subtly through processes of normalization, internalization of values, and discourse production, as described by Foucault. Thus, the film can be interpreted as a representation of modern social control, where domination occurs through symbolic structures and systematic surveillance mechanisms.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Love is something that humans constantly seek to understand and express, and it frequently appears in various media narratives. Based on this idea, this study explores how a particular type of love is portrayed in the Japanese animated film Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (2020). This research adopts a qualitative approach and applies Robert Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love to examine the relationship between the two main characters. The research process involves several stages: collecting data in the form of images and dialogues from selected scenes, categorizing the data into themes based on Sternberg’s three components of love (intimacy, passion, and commitment), conducting thematic analysis to identify patterns in the representation of love, and drawing conclusions on how the characters’ self-image is shaped through expressions of love in the film. The findings reveal that the relationship between Josee and Tsuneo exemplifies what Sternberg defines as consummate love—a complete form of love that includes emotional closeness, physical affection, and long-term commitment. Their bond is illustrated through honest communication and a supportive relationship, while passion and commitment are portrayed in a balanced way. This film demonstrates that animation can serve as an effective medium for representing deep and meaningful aspects of human relationships, offering a richer understanding of the essence of love. Berdasarkan gagasan tersebut, studi ini mengkaji bagaimana jenis cinta tertentu ditampilkan dalam film animasi Jepang Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (2020).

Abstract

This research analyzes the representation of the capitalist structure and the dynamics of class struggle within its system through a study of the film Emilia Perez (2024), utilizing the perspective of Marxism. The method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach based on Marxist critique. Data is collected from the characters dialogue, scenes, and visual representations, which showcase the conflict inherent in the capitalist environment. The analysis focuses on a critique of illicit activities within the capitalist setting and the struggle experienced by the social classes involved. The research verifies that the film strongly reflects that class contradiction within capitalism between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Furthermore, the film supports the Marxist analysis that the capitalist system maximizes absolute surplus value by employing economic power to modify legal frameworks. This demonstrates that the interest in capital accumulation becomes the primary objective, surpassing moral and legal boundaries.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the ecranisation process of Lily Brooks-Dalton's novel Good Morning, Midnight into the film The Midnight Sky (2020). The analysis views the narrative changes and their impact on thematic meaning. To be specific, the purpose of this study is to identify the various forms of reduction, addition, and change in the adaptation, as well as to analyze the way these changes affect the representation of characters, redemption, and parenting relationships constructed in both mediums. This study employed qualitative method, and used the Eneste's concept of adaptation. The results have shown that the film adaptation is found to have an impact on the independence of the female characters, partly due to the removal of internal narration and detailed background information. As a result, the theme of redemption becomes less explicit, and the simplification of intergenerational relationships reduces the importance of parental identity in the overall meaning of the story. It can be concluded that the ecranisation process reveals the way adapting a literary work into film can redirect the thematic priorities and reshape the depth through which meaning is conveyed.
