Abstract

Background: The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has distorted the education system, which greatly challenged educators in the pursuit of the continuity and quality of education. Commitment to perform duties and responsibilities are bounded in coping with the situation, emotional state, and the support from the organization. Objective: To analyze and understand the presumed interrelationship of modeled variables, such as the coping style, anxiety level, organizational support, and work commitment of educators during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: It is a mixed-methods study through an explanatory sequential approach. The path analysis technique was applied for quantitative with 116 educators as sample respondents guided by selection criteria. Digital immigrant educators with extreme responses were identified and asked permission for an interview.  Open-access adapted questionnaires used were Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Perceived Organizational Support (POS), Allen and Meyer’s Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). Data were processed and analyzed using SPSS and AMOS for descriptive and inferential statistics. A four-domain semi-structured questionnaire served as a guide in interviewing participants in the context of coping, anxiety, support, and work commitment. Thematic analysis was performed to generate themes.  Results: This study shown that educators often used coping style (1.87 ± 0.84; Mean ± SD), have a low level of anxiety (0.58 ± 0.69; Mean ± SD), have perceived uncertainty related to organizational support (4.03 ± 1.37; Mean ± SD), and neither agree nor disagree in terms of their work commitment (3.02 ± 0.93; Mean ± SD). The presumed model through path analysis has significantly predicted 28% plausibility (R2= 0.28) with only organizational support that shown significant influence towards educators’ work commitment (β = 0.22). The themes that emerged are challenging adjustment, predestined situation, fear of getting infected, difficulty teaching effectively, technologically challenged, psychosocial assistance, uncertainty, and willingness to explore. Conclusion: Educators during the COVID-19 pandemic were able to cope and control their anxiety through the test of time, seamless work commitment, and presence of support. This study can be considered a framework for situational analysis of nurse educators in the academic realm in times of emergency and disaster.

Abstract

Introduction: The global healthcare sector, especially the nursing profession, has experienced heightened demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to increased job-related stress, elevated burnout rates, and varying levels of job satisfaction that can significantly impact the effectiveness of responses to the pandemic. This study aimed to describe and analyze stress and burnout among nurses in Sulu, and explore how these factors relate to their job satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study employed a descriptive predictive research design to outline the variables and examine their potential impact on job satisfaction. It was conducted at two selected hospitals in Sulu, with nurses as the respondents. The sample comprised 83 staff nurses chosen from a total of 183. Data were collected using a validated and reliable adapted questionnaire. Analysis was carried out with SPSS version 24, including frequency and percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation, and simple linear regression. Results: The study finds that staff nurses' job satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic is significantly impacted by age and income, while higher stress levels and moderate burnout negatively affect it. The average mean stress level is 0.929, indicating that stress is rarely experienced, while burnout has an average mean of 1.536, suggesting it is also infrequent. Overall, the average mean job satisfaction score is 0.929, reflecting a general level of satisfaction among the staff nurses. Conclusion: This study concludes that young nurses are essential during pandemics due to their high activity levels but require guidance from experienced professionals to ensure quality healthcare. Administrators should support all nurses and offer reasonable income to manage stress and burnout, impacting job satisfaction. Future research should include a diverse range of healthcare professionals to explore stress and burnout differences among various roles and specializations.

Abstract

Background: The Badjao, a nomadic maritime group in Southeast Asia, faces heightened vulnerability during public health crises due to their reliance on maritime livelihoods, limited healthcare access, and historical marginalization – challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a significant research gap in understanding their unique needs and vulnerabilities, especially its specific impacts on their health and well-being due to the pandemic.Purpose: This study explores the psychological and social health of the Badjao and the factors affecting them during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study used an exploratory qualitative design. Guided semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 purposively selected Badjao respondents from Barangay Bus-Bus, Jolo-Sulu, Philippines. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The study identified five key themes related to the psychosocial health of the Badjao community during COVID-19 and the affecting factors. They were: (1) Feelings and apprehension, with anxiety over contracting the virus and financial instability; (2) Responses to the pandemic, marked by fear of death, job loss, and hospitalization concerns; (3) Coping mechanisms, where the community relied on traditional remedies, social support, and quarantine adherence; (4) Social status, highlighting food insecurity and disrupted social interactions; and (5) Factors influencing psychosocial health, focusing on the importance of support systems and access to accurate information and resources. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the social and economic stability of the Badjao community, exacerbating their existing vulnerabilities. The community needed culturally sensitive interventions that addressed both their immediate and long-term needs. Collaborations with local government units and stakeholders are crucial in supporting the resilience and well-being of the Badjao in future crises.
