Abstract

Self-care is known to be a health resource in later life because it enables the elderly to improve theirhealth and live at home as long as possible(1). It is therefore essential to resolve the question of self-care inthe elderly(2). The aim of the current study was to assess the level of self-care among elderly residents atnursing homes and to find out the difference between level of self-care with regard to socio-demographicand clinical characteristics. Descriptive study design carried out among 60 elderly persons at nursing homesin middle Euphrates, they are selected by using non probability sampling. The study instrument composed of2 parts. 1st Elderly’s Demographic Characteristics, 2nd self-care scale. The results of study reveal the overallassessment of self-care domains was moderate. In addition, there is a high significant in difference in selfcarelevel of the elderly with regard to their age and their marital status.

Abstract

Aging is described as progressive change in psychological, biological and social structure of persons. Theadvanced age contributed negatively to self-care. The relocation to care homes considered as stressful eventfor the elderly people. The purpose of this study to find the relationship between psychological well-beingand self-care among the elderly residents at nursing homes in middle Euphrates in Iraq. A descriptivecorrelationaldesign was used to gather the information from the sample of 60 participants in nursing homes.The study has been carried out from November, 1st, 2019 to August, 2020. Purposive sample used to collectthe data according to some criteria. The data collected by means of Ryff scales of psychological well-being(shorten version) and self-care questionnaire as well as the socio-demographical of study sample. The datacollected by using structured interview technique with the elderly residents in nursing homes. The data collected by using structured interview techniquewith the elderly residents in nursing homes. The results of study indicate that a relationship exists betweenpsychological well-being and self-care among the elderly residents in nursing homes. As the relationshipbetween the two variables is a high significant positive relationship (r = 0.721). The recommendations focuson managing the problems existing among the elderly and monitoring their psychological state. Establishingeducational programs on how to focus on the psychological and physical aspects. In addition, increasingleisure trips to various places.

Abstract

As people get older, may show shifts in the main sources that contribute to their well-being, in responseto the changing circumstances and abilities inherent in aging. The relocation to care homes considered asstressful event for the elderly people. A descriptive study is carried throughout the present study in orderto achieve the early stated objectives. The selection of the sample through a non - probability purposivesample consist of 60 elderly persons that are selected from the total population of elderly residents at nursinghomes. The data is collected by means of Ryff scales of psychological well-being (shorten version) . Thedata is collected by using structured interview technique with the elderly residents in nursing homes. Theanalysis indicates that the highest percentage of the elderly’s group have moderate level of psychologicalwellbeing (mean of score=3.29) (81.67%). The level of psychological well-being is affected by their gender.The study recommends to focus on managing the problems existing among the elderly and monitoring theirpsychological state.
